It is located on the west bank of the Nile some 55 km (34 mi) south of Luxor. The city was formerly part of the modern Qena Governorate, but as of 9 December 2009, it was incorporated into the new Luxor Governorate.

Built in the Ptolemaic-Roman period, the temple became covered with debris, which helped preserve it, so it is now 9 m below the modern street level.

- Get in2 options : A From West Bank direct bus to pick up close to the railway station B From est bank First bus to pick up on the main road at the cross with the channel close to the police check point DIRECTION Ermant 8 LE Second from Ermant to Esna 10 LE In total it takes 1 hr 30 min Those prices are in January 2024 for the minibus, there are also kind of pick up that are less expensive.
- Get aroundTaxis and tuk-tuks are available all throughout town, and offer a convenient transport from train or mini bus stations to the temple (there is not much else to see).
