Ella
Ella Jane Fitzgerald was an American jazz vocalist, songwriter and composer, sometimes referred to as the "First Lady of Song", "Queen of Jazz", and "Lady Ella".
She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing.
Getting around Ella the local way
Ella sits near the top of Sri Lanka's hill railway, a few stops short of the Badulla terminus, and the train is the reason most people come. That matters more than usual right now: Cyclone Ditwah wrecked most of the network in late 2025 and the Colombo and Kandy end of the hill line has still not been confirmed reopened, while Badulla to Ella to Nanu Oya is running again. Everything else moves by road from one short strip: the bus stops at the southern end of Ella's main street, where buses go down through Ella Gap to Wellawaya and on to the south coast, and up over the ridge to Bandarawela, Badulla, Haputale and Nuwara Eliya. Inside the town, tuk-tuks are everywhere and drivers quote by the trip rather than the meter, so the apps are the honest baseline. Guest houses rent scooters and a few outfits will deliver a self-drive tuk-tuk, both of which need a locally issued permit on top of your own licence. The two things visitors ride for, Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak, are both walkable from the town centre, and drivers make a living from people who do not know that.
- 01Hill Country train to Ellatrain
Colombo Fort to Kandy, Hatton, Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya), Haputale, Ella and Badulla. Ella is 271 km from Colombo Fort and 21 km short of Badulla
- Where
- Ella Railway Station is at the northern edge of the town centre, a short walk from the main street. Unreserved tickets are sold at the station counter on the day, sometimes only an hour before departure, and cannot sell out. Reserved seats are a separate transaction: at Colombo Fort they come from the Berth and Intercity Reservations Office, counter 17, reached from the roadway at the left-hand end of the station front; in Kandy from counters 1 and 2, marked as the Intercity counter. At Colombo Fort the unreserved counters for this line are 2 and 8. Seat 61 notes the reserved cars have their own attendant who locks doors to keep standees out, and that the air-conditioned first class and second class reserved cars sit at the Colombo end of the train between Colombo and Kandy and at the Badulla end beyond Kandy, so wait at the right end of the platform at an intermediate stop like Ella
- When
- Normal service is three daytime trains and one night mail each way between Colombo and Badulla, plus extra trains that turn back at Nanu Oya or Kandy. In normal times trains 1005 Podi Menike, 1015 Udarata Menike and 1007 reach Ella around 16:18, 17:23 and 18:41. Check before travelling: after Cyclone Ditwah, Sri Lanka Railways' own notice says Badulla to Nanu Oya has resumed, and Seat 61 still listed Colombo to Kandy, tea country and Badulla as affected in June 2026
- Fare (2026)
- Colombo to Ella unreserved second class Rs 900, third class Rs 440 (2026). Sri Lanka Railways' own tariff for Colombo Fort to Nanu Oya unreserved is Rs 750 second class and Rs 360 third class. Bandarawela to Badulla is Rs 80 second class and Rs 40 third class. Reserved seats cost more than unreserved on the same train; resellers charge several times face value
- Takes
- Colombo to Ella is 9 to 10 hours; Kandy to Ella about 6 to 7 hours; Nanu Oya to Ella roughly 3 hours
- Season
- Year-round when the line is open. The southwest Yala monsoon soaks the hill country roughly April to July, October and November are unsettled, and the hills are at their driest and clearest from January to March. Landslides after heavy rain are what closed the line in 2025
- Booking
- Only reserved cars can be booked, up to 30 days ahead. Wikivoyage says 32 days for Ella; Seat 61 says 30 days network-wide. They sell out within minutes, particularly the first class observation car and the air-conditioned first class car on the blue trains. Official online booking is at seatreservation.railway.gov.lk/mtktwebslr. Agents such as 12Go and Bookaway resell the same reserved seats at a markup, and in December and January tickets are often unavailable even from resellers one to two weeks out. If you miss out, buy an unreserved ticket at the station on the day and stand or sit in second or third class, which cannot sell out; a reserved seat in third class beats standing in second

- 02First class observation car and the Ella Odysseytrain
Rear observation saloon attached to selected Colombo to Badulla trains, and the separately branded Ella Odyssey and Dunhinda Odyssey tourist trains over the same hill line
- Where
- The observation car is the last vehicle on the train, with large rear windows looking back down the track. It is marked as class O in Sri Lanka Railways listings and is always reserved. On the Ella Odyssey the classes are an air-conditioned first class car with sealed windows and a second class reserved car with windows that open; the open-window car is the better one for photographs. Seat 61 warns some observation cars are air-conditioned and some are not, and that there is no catering, so bring your own food and water. Only two pairs of seats look straight out of the rear window
- When
- The observation car runs on a handful of departures a day in normal times, including trains 1126, 1009 and 1007 towards Badulla. The Ella Odyssey runs mainly at weekends and on public holidays, about 7 hours between Kandy and Ella
- Fare (2025)
- Reserved first class costs more than the unreserved second class fare of Rs 900 Colombo to Ella. Sri Lanka Railways publishes block-booking charges for whole carriages on Colombo Fort to Badulla trains, including the Ella Odyssey and Dunhinda Odyssey, at Rs 12,000 a first class seat, Rs 10,000 second class and Rs 8,000 third class, for groups of more than 10 booked at least 35 days out. Individual reserved fares are lower and resellers charge several times face value
- Takes
- Same as the ordinary train on the section travelled; the Ella Odyssey takes longer because it stops for photographs
- Season
- Runs when the hill line is open. Suspended or truncated since Cyclone Ditwah in November and December 2025; a Hopscotch Travels update in December 2025 expected the full Colombo to Ella run to stay closed for months
- Booking
- Tickets release 30 days ahead on the Sri Lanka Railways portal and sell out within minutes. Agencies buy them the moment booking opens and resell at a markup. Station counters can work but rarely do at this level of demand

- 03Buses down Ella Gap to Wellawaya and the southminibus
Ella south through Ella Gap to Wellawaya, where the road splits for Matara and Galle along the south coast, for Kataragama and Tissamaharama, and for Monaragala, Ampara and Pottuvil
- Where
- The bus stops are at the southern end of Ella's main road, just south of the Ella to Passara road junction. Buses towards Ampara pull in in front of the curd shop and the Lavazza Barista shop. Wave the bus down and pay the conductor on board. Coming the other way, from Wellawaya you take a Bandarawela bus, but only one of the two Wellawaya to Bandarawela routes goes through Ella, so confirm with the conductor. Wikivoyage warns that tuk-tuk drivers in Wellawaya will steer you to the wrong platform so you take their tuk-tuk instead
- When
- From the Ella bus stops, about 7 departures a day to Matara, 4 to Galle stopping at Mirissa, 4 to Kataragama, 4 to Ampara, 3 to Monaragala, 3 to Maligawila, 3 to Thanamalwila and 2 to Ambilipitiya (April 2025). Named departures include 08:45 Ella to Matara and 09:15 Ella to Ampara via Monaragala and Siyambalanduwa
- Fare (2026)
- Ella to Monaragala Rs 184 and Monaragala to Arugam Bay via Pottuvil Rs 247 (2025). The National Transport Commission's July 2026 interprovincial tariff gives the full Matara to Badulla fare, route 31-2, as Rs 989 on a normal bus; Ella is short of Badulla so pays less. Colombo to Badulla, route 99, is Rs 1,117 normal, Rs 1,676 semi-luxury and Rs 2,131 air-conditioned. A local bus down to Rawana Falls is about Rs 50
- Takes
- Wellawaya about 1 hour. Monaragala about 2 hours. Matara and Galle 5 to 7 hours over the escarpment. Monaragala to Pottuvil and Arugam Bay about 3 hours 30 minutes
- Season
- Year-round. The Ella Gap descent and the roads over the escarpment are the weak point in heavy rain; the southwest monsoon runs roughly April to July and October and November are unsettled
- Booking
- None for ordinary buses, pay the conductor. Long-distance air-conditioned interprovincial services can be reserved through the National Transport Commission's online reservation system

- 04Buses up the ridge to Bandarawela, Badulla, Haputale and Nuwara Eliyaminibus
Ella north and west along the A16 and B-roads to Bandarawela, Badulla, Haputale, Welimada and Nuwara Eliya, plus night buses to Kandy and Colombo
- Where
- Same stops on the southern end of Ella's main road. Bandarawela is the interchange for anything heading west: Haputale, Welimada and Nuwara Eliya buses all run from there, and Badulla is the interchange for Ampara, Trincomalee and the north. Badulla bus station is on King Street near the post office. Ella to Badulla is also a short train hop when the line is running, which is often faster than the road
- When
- From Ella, about 5 departures a day to Nuwara Eliya and 3 night buses to Kandy (April 2025). From Badulla, buses to Nuwara Eliya run about half-hourly until 16:30 and to Colombo between 07:30 and 23:00. From Bandarawela there are regular services to Nuwara Eliya via Welimada, to Haputale, to Colombo and to Galle
- Fare (2026)
- National Transport Commission July 2026 full fares: Kandy to Badulla, route 21, Rs 590 normal and Rs 885 semi-luxury; Colombo to Badulla, route 21-6, Rs 1,100 and Rs 1,650; Colombo to Nuwara Eliya, route 79, Rs 844 normal, Rs 1,266 semi-luxury and Rs 1,619 air-conditioned. Short hops from Ella are a fraction of these; Wikivoyage puts ordinary Sri Lankan bus travel at roughly Rs 5 to 10 per km
- Takes
- Bandarawela 30 to 45 minutes, Badulla about 1 hour 30 minutes, Haputale about 1 hour 30 minutes, Nuwara Eliya 3 to 4 hours, Kandy about 6 hours, Colombo about 7 hours
- Season
- Year-round. Expect fog and slow going on the Welimada and Nuwara Eliya roads in the afternoons, and worse in the April to July monsoon
- Booking
- None on ordinary buses. Guest houses and agents in Ella also sell seats in shared tourist minivans to Nuwara Eliya, Haputale, Kandy and the south coast, which pick up at your accommodation; these are not a public service and prices are set by the agent

- 05Tuk-tuks in and around Ellatuk tuk
Anywhere in Ella and the surrounding valley: the station, Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Rawana Falls, Demodara, Bandarawela and Ella Rock trailheads
- Where
- They wait outside Ella railway station and along the main street, and you can wave one down almost anywhere. No meters in practice. Agree the price before you get in, and be specific about the destination, because drivers taking you to Nine Arch Bridge will otherwise use a long circuitous road route that ends at track level and costs more. Wikivoyage advises asking locals rather than tuk-tuk drivers for directions to the bridge. The honest way to set a price is to open PickMe or Uber, which both work in Sri Lanka and both list tuk-tuks, and use the app quote as the number to bargain against or simply take the app ride
- When
- On demand, all day; thinner after dark
- Fare (2025)
- Wikivoyage puts a fair negotiated rate at Rs 70 to 100 per km, and notes most drivers overcharge foreigners, so never accept the first price. For comparison on the same hill roads, a tuk-tuk from Nanu Oya station into Nuwara Eliya town, 8 km, should be about Rs 1,500, and a hop inside Nuwara Eliya town about Rs 700
- Takes
- Station to the main street 5 minutes; Nine Arch Bridge road approach 10 to 15 minutes; Rawana Falls about 15 minutes
- Season
- Year-round
- Booking
- None needed. Use PickMe or Uber if you want a fixed price without haggling; PickMe has the wider coverage outside the big cities

- 06Self-drive scooter and tuk-tuk hire, and the permit you need firstprivate hire
Ella as a base for the Uva hills: Ella Gap, Demodara, Passara, Bandarawela, Haputale and the Lipton's Seat road
- Where
- Most guest houses in Ella rent scooters, and Wikivoyage calls this the best way to get around. Self-drive tuk-tuks come from national rental companies rather than local shops; TukTukRental.com lists Ella as a delivery point. The legal part is the catch. A foreign licence alone is not enough and an International Driving Permit alone is not enough either. You need your national licence, a physical IDP booklet from your home country, and then a Recognition Permit issued in Sri Lanka by the Automobile Association of Ceylon, which has offices in Colombo and Kandy. For a tuk-tuk the permit has to be endorsed 3WHEEL; the Department of Motor Traffic is not currently issuing three-wheeler authorisation to foreign visitors. For a scooter your home licence and IDP must already carry the motorcycle category, because most scooters here are over 100cc and you cannot add the category as a tourist. Rental companies will arrange the AAC permit in advance if you send them scans before you arrive
- When
- On demand from guest houses; rental companies need a few days' notice to have the permit ready
- Fare (2026)
- Delivery of a rental tuk-tuk to Ella costs an extra US$40 on top of the daily rate (2026). Guest house scooter rates in Ella were not confirmed from a source
- Takes
- Rented by the day or the week
- Season
- Year-round, but the hill roads are wet, misty and slippery from April to July and again in October and November, and leeches come out on the verges after rain
- Booking
- Scooters walk-up at the guest house. Tuk-tuks online in advance so the Recognition Permit is ready. Carry all three documents when you drive: national licence, IDP and Sri Lankan Recognition Permit

- 07Walking to Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam's Peak instead of ridingwalking trail
Ella town centre east along Ella to Passara road to the Little Adam's Peak path and the Nine Arch Bridge turn-off; or along the railway track from Ella station to the bridge
- Where
- From the town centre walk east on Ella to Passara road. About 20 minutes along, the path for Little Adam's Peak cuts left across tea plantations before the final climb. For Nine Arch Bridge, keep going roughly 45 minutes and take a left down a paved road and concrete steps. The alternative is to walk the railway line from Ella station straight to the bridge, listening for trains. The bridge and the peak link up: it is about 5 km between them. Ella Rock is the longer one, about 2 hours each way, the first 1.5 km along the track south of Ella. Villagers below Ella Rock rub out the paths and cut new ones, then appear offering to guide you, so follow the OpenStreetMap trails marked Footpath to Ella Rock in an offline maps app
- When
- Any time. Roughly four trains cross Nine Arch Bridge between 10:00 and 13:00, so check the timetable if you want one in the photograph
- Fare (2024)
- Free. Ella Rock has a foreigner entry charge of Rs 930. Ella Organic Tea Garden, 5 km south off Kithalella road, charges Rs 3,000 a person for its tour
- Takes
- Little Adam's Peak about 45 minutes each way from town. Nine Arch Bridge about 45 minutes each way. Ella Rock about 2 hours each way
- Season
- Year-round, but do not walk the trails in shorts and sandals after rain: leeches wait on the roadside vegetation. Come early for the bridge, it fills with visitors later
- Booking
- None

Not yet confirmed: Correction to the brief: reserved train seats open 30 days ahead on Seat 61's reading, not a settled 32; the Ella Wikivoyage article says 32 days. Both agree they vanish immediately. The exact number could not be confirmed from Sri Lanka Railways directly because the official Train Schedule page has been down for redevelopment since at least June 2026 and the reservation portal needs a login.; Correction to the brief: the hill railway may not be running end to end. Cyclone Ditwah damaged about 70% of the network in November and December 2025. Sri Lanka Railways' front page carries a notice that Badulla to Nanu Oya has resumed, and Seat 61's page updated 10 June 2026 still lists Colombo to Kandy, tea country and Badulla as affected. No source found confirming whether Nanu Oya to Kandy and Colombo had reopened by September 2026. Check railway.gov.lk before planning around the train.; Exact 2026 reserved-seat fares Colombo or Kandy to Ella for first class observation, first class air-conditioned and second class reserved were not found. The published unreserved fares and the group block-booking charges are sourced; the ordinary reserved fares are not.; The size of the reseller markup on Ella train tickets could not be pinned to a number. Sources say several times face value but none quote a figure.; Ella Odyssey current operating days, departure times and ticket prices for 2026 could not be confirmed; the Sri Lanka Railways page for it has not been updated since 2022 and the schedule site is offline.; Scooter hire day rates in Ella were not found from a citable source. Ask guest houses directly.; Shared tourist minivans from Ella to Nuwara Eliya, Haputale and the south coast are sold widely by guest houses and agents, but no operator page with fares and pick-up times could be fetched; 12Go and Bookaway route pages render in JavaScript and returned nothing useful.; No official Sri Lanka Railways bulletin confirming Ella station's current served destinations could be retrieved; the Train Schedule page shows a notice saying it is under development..
The field note on Ella reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
