El Chaltén
El Chaltén is a small mountain village in Santa Cruz Province, Argentina.
It is located on the riverside of Rio de las Vueltas, within the Los Glaciares National Park near the base of Cerro Torre and Cerro Fitz Roy spires, both popular for climbing. It is 220 kilometres (140 mi) north of El Calafate. It is also a popular base for hiking numerous trails, such as those to the base of surrounding peaks and glacial lakes, such as Laguna Torre and Laguna de los Tres.
Getting to El Chaltén
From: El Calafate – Daily buses take 3 hr to drive the 222 km over a newly paved road. Buses leave at 08:00, 13:00 and 18:00, depending on the company. Avoid the company Taqsa/Marga, they have old and bad buses with failing or no ventilation at all, which is terrible... or course, depending on the weather.El Calafate Airport ― All the El Calafate to El Chalten buses stop at the airport to pick up passengers.
Worth seeing
For most things that are to see here, you will have to hike, see below.
Things to do
In the centre of town you can also pay to go horse riding with a gaucho guide along some of the major walking trails. The horses are easy-going and well suited to beginner riders. Salmon fishing is popular near El Chalten, because many fish travel up Río de Las Vueltas back to their roots.
Where to eat
The calafate berry ice cream, a bit like blueberry but milder, from the ice cream shop in the middle of the town is worth trying. There are two small grocery stores selling food and supplies. There are at least a dozen restaurants in town.
- 01Como Vaca
Very nice parrilla restaurant, great steaks and also other home made food at fair prices.
- 02La Tapera
This restaurant offers traditional meals and more innovative options.
Getting around El Chaltén the local way
One paved road in and the same road out: three daily buses from El Calafate over 220 km of RP40 and RP41, plus a seasonal Ruta 40 run north to Bariloche. Inside the village nobody needs transport – the Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre trails start from the streets themselves. Everything else is a paid transfer: up the ripio to Lago del Desierto, out to Río Eléctrico to shorten the Laguna de los Tres walk, or onto Lago Viedma by boat. The only way into Chile is a boat, a footpath and another boat, with no road at any point.
- 01El Calafate – El Chaltén regular busminibus
El Calafate bus terminal and El Calafate airport (FTE) to El Chaltén bus terminal, via RP11, RN40 and RP41
- Where
- Three companies run it and all three have counters in the El Chaltén terminal at the entrance to the village: Taqsa in Local 2, Cal Tur in Local 3, Chaltén Travel in Local 4. At the El Calafate end they sell from the ómnibus terminal; buses also call at El Calafate airport, where Chaltén Travel has an office and the others have counters, so a ticket can be bought off the plane rather than booked ahead. Buses stop on the way at the national park information centre just before the bridge into town, where you are handed a trail map. Caltur also drops at its own Hostel Pioneros del Valle after the terminal, and Chaltén Travel at Rancho Grande.
- When
- Three departures a day each way, year-round; morning and afternoon on all three companies, commonly quoted as around 08:00, 13:00 and 18:00 depending on the operator and the season
- Fare (2026)
- Fare not published on the operator sites – Caltur and Chaltén Travel both quote the regular bus on request only. For scale, Chaltén Travel's guided Full Day Chaltén round trip from El Calafate was ARS 135,000 per person for 2026
- Takes
- About 3 hours for 220 km, fully paved
- Season
- Year-round, but the winter timetable thins out and RN40 north of El Calafate is cut by snow and blowing snow several times each winter
- Booking
- At the terminal counters in either town, at the El Calafate airport counters, or online with each company; in January and February book a day or two ahead

- 02Ruta 40 north – Perito Moreno, Los Antiguos and Barilocheminibus
El Chaltén north along RN40 through Tres Lagos, Gobernador Gregores, Perito Moreno and Los Antiguos to El Bolsón and Bariloche
- Where
- Sold from the same terminal counters in El Chaltén; Chaltén Travel is the company that built this run and it exists mainly for travellers, not for locals, because Calafate and Bariloche have almost no traffic between them. It is not one overnight bus but a staged trip with a night stop, most often in Perito Moreno, which is also the base for the Cueva de las Manos rock art. Get the ticket the day you arrive in El Chaltén – seats are limited and there is no alternative service.
- When
- Several services a week, not daily
- Fare
- Not published; sold by the company on request
- Takes
- About 30 hours in total to Bariloche over 1,392 km; Perito Moreno and Los Antiguos are roughly 12 hours out
- Season
- October to April only. The service stops for the winter and long gravel sections of RN40 make it unreliable in bad weather even in season.
- Booking
- At the El Chaltén or El Calafate terminal counters, or with Chaltén Travel directly; book as early as you can

- 03Trailheads inside the village, and the new park ticketwalking trail
Laguna de los Tres, Laguna Torre, Loma del Pliegue Tumbado and the Cóndor and Águila miradores, all starting from streets in El Chaltén
- Where
- The Laguna Torre trail starts at the western end of town; the Fitz Roy trail starts at the northern end of Av. San Martín next to the bakery; the two miradores start behind the park office. No bus, no taxi, no shuttle is needed to begin any of them. Since 1 June 2026 the Zona Norte sectors – Los Cóndores, Cerro Torre and Río Eléctrico – charge an entrance ticket and it is sold online only, by card: there is no cash desk at the trailheads, so buy before you set off. Free river water along the trails means you do not need to carry more than about half a litre. Register with the park office for the Huemul Circuit and the Viedma glacier trek, which need a harness.
- When
- Walk out when you like; the trails are busiest from about 09:00 in January and February, so leave at dawn to have them quiet
- Fare (2026)
- Zona Norte entrance ticket, in force from 1 June 2026: ARS 50,000 general, ARS 25,000 Argentine residents, ARS 15,000 students, ARS 8,000 Santa Cruz residents; free for over-65s, under-7s and people with disabilities. Wikivoyage reported roughly ARS 30,000 per day earlier in 2026, with a discount for three or more consecutive days.
- Takes
- Laguna de los Tres about 8 hours return, Laguna Torre about 6 hours, Loma del Pliegue Tumbado 24 km and 6–7 hours
- Season
- Year-round on the lower trails; snow, ice and short daylight make the high sections a winter mountaineering problem rather than a walk from June to September, and registration is mandatory for remote trekking May to September
- Booking
- Zona Norte tickets online only, card payment, no cash accepted at the trail; free registration for the Huemul Circuit and Viedma trek at the visitor centre on RP41 before the bridge

- 04Transfer to Río Eléctrico and El Pilarprivate hire
El Chaltén north up RP23 to the Río Eléctrico bridge and the El Pilar access, 17 km
- Where
- Minibus operators run a morning drop and an afternoon pick-up so walkers can start Laguna de los Tres from the north side and finish in town, turning an 8-hour out-and-back into a one-way traverse past Laguna Piedras Blancas. Zona Austral Turismo at San Martín 629 sells it, and the bus station keeps a list of all the businesses offering transfers. Many walkers do this rather than the classic return route.
- When
- Daily in season, timed to the walking day: out early morning, back late afternoon
- Fare (2026)
- About ARS 18,000 one way, reported for 2026
- Takes
- About 30 minutes each way on gravel
- Season
- Roughly October to April; services thin out or stop in winter
- Booking
- In the operators' offices on Av. San Martín, at the bus station, or online

- 05Lago del Desierto minibus and lake boatboat
El Chaltén north on the RP23 ripio to the southern shore of Lago del Desierto, 37 km, then by boat up the lake
- Where
- Zona Austral Turismo at San Martín 629 runs both halves itself – a minibus with a Spanish and English audio guide and a photo stop, then a one-hour boat along the lake under the hanging glaciers. The road is a dead end and the only road access to the lake, so the minibus is how almost everyone gets there. From the northern shore the Glaciar Huemul walk and the footpath towards the Chilean border both start.
- When
- Daily transfers in season; the boat runs daily, generally twice a day, and one sailing is timed to the arrivals from the border trail
- Fare (2026)
- 2026 Zona Austral prices: road transfer from ARS 50,000, Navegación Safari Lago del Desierto from ARS 65,000, kayak from ARS 125,000, Glaciar Huemul walk from ARS 25,000
- Takes
- About 1 hour each way by road; the lake navigation is 1 hour
- Season
- Main season roughly October to April; the road is gravel and exposed and services reduce sharply in winter
- Booking
- Online at zonaaustralturismo.com, by WhatsApp, or at the San Martín 629 office

- 06Crossing into Chile to Villa O'Higgins – two boats and a footpathboat
El Chaltén to Lago del Desierto, boat to the north shore, then about 22 km on foot or by horse or bicycle over the border to Candelario Mancilla, then the Lago O'Higgins boat to Puerto Bahamondez and Villa O'Higgins
- Where
- There is no road at any point of this crossing and no vehicle can make it, so it is done in stages. Take the Lago del Desierto minibus and boat, get the Argentine exit stamp at the Gendarmería post at the north end of the lake, then walk the track to the Chilean post just outside Candelario Mancilla. Horses and guides can be hired at Candelario Mancilla to carry packs; cyclists often send their bags with the horses because of single-log bridges and mud. The Lago O'Higgins boat is run by Hielo Sur at Villa O'Higgins: it leaves the village in the morning, calls at Candelario Mancilla at about 10:00 on its way to the glacier, and comes back past Mancilla around 17:30. There is a simple refugio at the Argentine border post if you are stranded, and the Gendarmería will usually let you camp by the lake. Carry food for an unplanned night – delays are routine.
- When
- The Lago O'Higgins boat runs three to four times a week; the crossing takes one long day if everything connects and two or three if it does not
- Fare (2026)
- CLP 44,000 for the Candelario Mancilla to Villa O'Higgins boat leg, plus the Argentine-side transfer and lake boat (ARS 50,000 and ARS 65,000 in 2026)
- Takes
- Two to three days end to end is the usual allowance; the border walk alone is about 22 km
- Season
- November to March only. In bad weather the Lago O'Higgins service can be suspended for days at a time.
- Booking
- Book the Hielo Sur sailing ahead – it is a small boat and the crossing is popular with cyclists; the Argentine-side transfers are booked in El Chaltén

- 07Aventura Viedma – Lago Viedma boat from El Chalténboat
Puerto Bahía Túnel, about 12 km south of El Chaltén, across Lago Viedma to the front of the Viedma Glacier
- Where
- Solo Patagonia sells it from Av. San Martín 451 in El Chaltén and picks up in the village; the boat itself leaves from Bahía Túnel, reached by road. This is the only scheduled boat anywhere near El Chaltén that goes to a glacier – there is no boat service on Laguna Torre or Laguna de los Tres, which are walk-in glacial lakes with no port. The ice trek that used to be combined with this boat stopped when the glacier retreated.
- When
- Daily in season, 10:30 to 14:30
- Fare (2026)
- From ARS 145,000 per adult; under-13s half price, under-3s free
- Takes
- 4 hours
- Season
- October to March
- Booking
- solopatagonia.com or the El Chaltén office at Av. San Martín 451

- 08Hitching on RP23 and RP41hitchhiking
North up RP23 towards Río Eléctrico, El Pilar and Lago del Desierto; south on RP41 towards the RN40 junction and El Calafate
- Where
- Stand at the northern edge of the village on RP23 for the trailheads and the lake, or past the bridge on RP41 for anything heading out. Drivers accept it readily and there is a steady flow of hire cars and minibuses to the same handful of destinations. The catch is that every other traveller in town has the same idea in January and February, so there can be a queue of people with thumbs out. Split up or have money for the minibus as a fallback.
- When
- Daylight only, and only as often as cars happen to pass – RP23 is quiet outside the morning and late-afternoon walking rush
- Fare
- Free; some drivers will accept a share of fuel
- Takes
- 30 minutes to Río Eléctrico, about an hour to Lago del Desierto, about 3 hours to El Calafate if you get a through lift
- Season
- Year-round in principle, but in winter the traffic drops to almost nothing and standing in the Patagonian wind at 0 °C is a different proposition
- Booking
- none

Not yet confirmed: No operator publishes a one-way fare for the El Calafate – El Chaltén regular bus. Caltur and Chaltén Travel both list the service with a price of zero and a 'request a quote' button, and Taqsa sells only through its booking engine, which needs a date and a search. Bookaway, Busbud and 12Go all return 404 for this route. Ask at the terminal counters in either town, or run a dated search on taqsa.com.ar or caltur.b2c.sisorg.com.; The brief mentions a free national park shuttle at El Chaltén. Nothing on the municipal tourism site, the Los Glaciares park pages or Wikivoyage describes one, and the trails start inside the village so there is nothing obvious for a shuttle to do. The transport that does exist out of town – Río Eléctrico, El Pilar, Lago del Desierto – is commercial minibus. Treat the free shuttle as unconfirmed and check with the Centro de Visitantes on RP41.; The brief mentions Laguna Torre boats. There is no boat service on Laguna Torre; it is a walk-in glacial lake. The scheduled glacier boat near El Chaltén is Solo Patagonia's Aventura Viedma from Puerto Bahía Túnel on Lago Viedma, which is recorded above instead.; Park entry at El Chaltén used to be free and both the municipal tourism site and Caltur still say so ('acceso gratuito', 'En El Chaltén no se cobra ingreso al Parque Nacional'). The national parks tariff page shows a Zona Norte ticket from 1 June 2026, online only. Confirm at the visitor centre before relying on either statement.; Exact 2026/27 departure times per company are not published in one place; the 08:00 / 13:00 / 18:00 pattern comes from Wikivoyage and the operators only confirm 'morning and afternoon'. Check the counters or the company sites for the current season.; Winter service levels – how many of the three bus companies keep running in June to August, and which transfer operators and boats shut entirely – are not documented on any source found. The Caltur climate posts describe winter as having 'menor cantidad de servicios abiertos' but give no specifics.; Hielo Sur's own site (villaohiggins.com) returns an empty body to every fetch, so the CLP 44,000 Lago O'Higgins fare and the three-to-four sailings a week come from Wikivoyage rather than the operator. Contact Hielo Sur directly for current sailing days and price..
