Cape Maclear (Chembe)
Cape Maclear or Chembe is a town in the Mangochi District of Malawi's Southern Region.
The town, on the Nankumba Peninsula, is on the southern shore of Lake Malawi and is the busiest resort on Lake Malawi. Cape Maclear is close to the islands of Domwe, Thumbwe and Mumbo Island on Lake Malawi, and is in Lake Malawi National Park.
Getting to Cape Maclear (Chembe)
From the bus station in Lilongwe, take a minibus to Monkey Bay for a few bucks. A miter bike will take you the rest of the way into Cape Maclear (if you get stuck, you can always stay in Monkey Bay). If you travel directly by car from Lilongwe plan on a 5- to 6-hour drive. Bus plus the motorcycle ride plan on 8 hours or more.
Worth seeing
There is a beautiful beach to take in.

These are the final resting places of the first missionaries to the area, who died in 1875.
Things to do
Frankly, doing as little as possible is the whole point of Cape Maclear, but there are actual activities, in case you get bored. Kayak Africa, fax: +27 21 706 9771, letsgo@kayakafrica.co.za. Runs day trips from Cape Maclear. Since the Lake is pretty calm, boat trips can be rewarding. Kayak Africa is the only PADI registered club in Cape Maclear.

Where to eat
There are several small Malawian restaurants along the main road. If you want a great, reasonably priced seafood dinner ($2 or so for a big Chambo fillet), try any of them. A reservation is a good idea, not because the restaurant is likely to be crowded, but rather, so the owner knows he's going to have some business. Be sure to eat some of the chips (french fries) the boys sell along the main road.
Getting around Cape Maclear (Chembe) the local way
Cape Maclear is the fishing village of Chembe on a dead-end peninsula inside Lake Malawi National Park, and everything arrives through Monkey Bay. There are three separate ways in. Overland, you ride a minibus from Lilongwe or Blantyre to Monkey Bay – six hours or more, and painful – then take a minibus taxi, a kabaza motorbike or a hired pickup for the last 18 km to the beach; that stretch used to be a bad dirt road and is now tarred almost to the village, with only the last kilometre of village road unpaved. By water, the MV Ilala lake ferry has its home port at Monkey Bay and leaves for the north once a week, taking about three days to reach Chilumba, and its published timetable is a hope rather than a promise – it waits for cargo, it is turned back by the Mwera winds, and the government pulled it off the lake entirely in late 2025 before it went back into service in 2026 under a new state operator. By air you charter to the lakeshore airstrip at Club Makokola and drive the last hour. Inside Chembe there is nothing to catch: the village is one long sandy road you walk. Movement on the water is the real local transport – Kayak Africa's scheduled boat out to Domwe and Mumbo islands, a kayak if you would rather paddle the 5 or 10 km yourself, and the wooden boats that village guides run to Thumbi West Island and Otter Point, negotiated on the beach. Fuel shortages are a recurring national problem and they hit minibus and boat operators here before they hit anyone else.
- 01MV Ilala lake ferry, Monkey Bay to Chilumbaboat
Monkey Bay (the port 18 km by road from Chembe) north to Chilumba, calling at Makanjila, Senga Bay, Nkhotakota, Likoma Island, Chizumulu Island, Nkhata Bay, Usisya, Ruarwe, Tcharo and Mlowe, then the same ports back southbound. Roughly 365 km end to end
- Where
- There is no ferry stop at Cape Maclear itself – you go to Monkey Bay port, which is also the ship's home berth and where it lies over between voyages. Get to Monkey Bay by minibus or kabaza the day before rather than the morning of departure. Tickets are bought at the port office; the operator's booking line published by Malawi Tourism is +265 881 13 46 35. At several stops, including Likoma, the ship anchors offshore and small boats ferry passengers in, so expect a second scramble and a second small payment at the far end
- When
- Once a week in each direction on the published timetable: leaves Monkey Bay Friday 08:00 northbound, reaches Chilumba Sunday 17:30, turns round and departs Chilumba Monday 02:30, back at Monkey Bay Wednesday 20:00, then lies at Monkey Bay Wednesday and Thursday. In practice it runs late by hours or days – it waits for cargo at each port, it has been turned back mid-lake by weather, and it has been withdrawn from service for long periods
- Fare (2021)
- Four classes: cabin, first, second and economy, with a bar and restaurant on board. The operator's own published fare sheet is badly out of date (Monkey Bay to Nkhata Bay MK44,800 and Monkey Bay to Chilumba MK50,950 in owner's cabin, priced November 2014) and real fares are now far higher. A more recent indication from the short Nkhata Bay to Likoma hop: Standard Cabin MK11,000, Upper Deck MK7,650, Second Class MK4,100. Children up to 13 pay half, and the ticket price includes 7 kg of baggage
- Takes
- About three days from Monkey Bay to Chilumba. Monkey Bay to Nkhotakota is scheduled at roughly 13 hours, Monkey Bay to Nkhata Bay at about two days
- Season
- Year-round in principle. The dangerous window is the Mwera winds, the strong southeasterlies that make the open lake very rough; in July 2018 they cost the ship its lights and one engine and forced it to abort a Monkey Bay run mid-lake. Sailings are also cancelled outright for maintenance and for labour disputes
- Booking
- In person at the Monkey Bay port office, or by phone on the number above. Cabins sell out and are worth arranging days ahead; deck class is normally walk-up

- 02Lilongwe and Blantyre minibus to Monkey Bayminibus
Lilongwe Devil Road depot to Monkey Bay bus and minibus terminus, about 230 km via the M1 and the lakeshore road. From Blantyre the run is via Mangochi and the Monkey Bay road
- Where
- In Lilongwe go to the Devil Road depot rather than the tidy long-distance coach offices at City Mall; ask for Monkey Bay and expect to change at Salima or Mangochi if no direct vehicle is loading. Vehicles leave when full, so the earlier in the morning you arrive the better your chance of a same-day arrival in Chembe. Monkey Bay is the end of the line and also the main bus and minibus terminus for the whole peninsula
- When
- No timetable – they go when every seat is taken, mostly from first light to early afternoon. Travellers report six hours or more for the Lilongwe run
- Fare (2026)
- MK50,000 from Lilongwe to Monkey Bay as reported by Wikivoyage in 2026
- Takes
- 6 hours and up from Lilongwe if you get a direct vehicle; a full day door to door from Lilongwe or Blantyre to Chembe including the change at Monkey Bay
- Season
- Year-round. Journeys slow badly during national fuel shortages, when drivers queue for hours or buy on the black market and pass the cost on
- Booking
- None. Pay the conductor, and agree any luggage charge before your bag goes on the roof

- 03AXA and National Bus coaches from Lilongwe and Blantyrebus
Scheduled intercity coaches on the Karonga – Mzuzu – Lilongwe – Blantyre spine. There was a daily AXA departure from Lilongwe bus terminal at 08:00 reaching Monkey Bay about 14:00, but Wikivoyage reports it is no longer running
- Where
- AXA sells from City Mall in Lilongwe, St George's Street near KIPS restaurant in Blantyre, and along the M5 in Mzuzu; National Bus Company also sells from City Mall in Lilongwe and 5 Hanover Avenue in Blantyre. Ask at the counter whether anything is currently running through to Monkey Bay – if not, the coach gets you as far as Lilongwe or Blantyre and you take a minibus from there. A Kwezy bus is also mentioned on the Monkey Bay route
- When
- Daily on the trunk routes. The Monkey Bay branch is unreliable and was reported as not operating in 2026
- Fare (2023)
- AXA: MK14,000 Lilongwe to Blantyre, MK15,000 Lilongwe to Mzuzu, MK22,000 Lilongwe to Karonga (April 2023). National Bus Company: MK20,000 adult Lilongwe to Blantyre, MK12,000 for an accompanied child aged 4 to 9 (June 2023). No published Monkey Bay fare
- Takes
- About 6 hours Lilongwe to Monkey Bay when the direct service ran; about 5 hours Lilongwe to Blantyre
- Season
- Year-round, with the same fuel-shortage disruption as everything else on the road
- Booking
- At the company offices listed above, or by phone – AXA on +265 1 820 100, National Bus Lilongwe on +265 884 821 098

- 04Monkey Bay to Chembe minibus taxi and hired pickupshare taxi
Monkey Bay terminus to Chembe village, about 18 km. You leave the Monkey Bay road at a signed turn-off 5 km short of Monkey Bay, run down to the Lake Malawi National Park gates, then turn onto the village road
- Where
- Ask at the Monkey Bay minibus terminus for Cape Maclear or Chembe. Shared minibuses and pickups fill up and go; if nothing is loading, lodges will quote you a private vehicle for the same trip. Coming the other way, you flag anything heading out of the village on the single road. The 18 km stretch used to be the memorable bad bit of the journey and is now newly tarred nearly all the way, with only the last kilometre or so of village road left unpaved – no 4x4 needed
- When
- Informal, several a day, more in the morning and around the arrival of vehicles from Lilongwe. Nothing after dark
- Fare (2024)
- Around MK5,000, roughly US$3, for a seat in a minibus taxi. A whole private vehicle is around MK30,000, roughly US$18
- Takes
- About 30 minutes
- Season
- Year-round; the road is passable in the rains now that it is tarred
- Booking
- None for the shared vehicles – pay the driver. For a private vehicle, message a lodge ahead on WhatsApp

- 05Kabaza motorbike from Monkey Bay to Chembemoto taxi
Monkey Bay terminus to any lodge in Chembe village, 18 km
- Where
- Riders wait at the Monkey Bay minibus terminus and at the Cape Maclear turn-off, and they will find you before you find them. This is the usual last leg for backpackers arriving late, when the shared minibuses have stopped. One bag on your back, a second across the tank; anything bigger will not fit
- When
- On demand through the day, thinning out after dark
- Fare (2024)
- Around MK5,000, roughly US$3
- Takes
- 25 to 35 minutes
- Season
- Year-round, but unpleasant and slippery in heavy rain
- Booking
- None. Agree the price before you get on

- 06Kayak Africa transfer boat to Domwe and Mumbo islandsboat
Kayak Africa reception on the mainland beach at Chembe (S14 1.805' E34 49.915') out to Domwe Island 5 km offshore and Mumbo Island 10 km offshore, both inside Lake Malawi National Park
- Where
- Walk along the Chembe beachfront to the Kayak Africa reception, which is also where self-drivers leave a car in secure parking and where all island tabs are settled. The boat runs to a fixed twice-daily schedule rather than on demand, so missing it costs you half a day
- When
- Twice daily each way. Mumbo: depart reception 10:30 and 15:00, depart island 09:30 and 14:00. Domwe: depart reception 10:30 and 15:00, depart island 10:00 and 14:30
- Fare (2026)
- US$18 per person one way for the boat transfer. Paddling instead: a guided kayak excursion is US$12 per person and kayak plus snorkelling gear rental is US$6 per person. A half-day camp fee of US$18 applies if you come out on the morning boat and go back on the afternoon one
- Takes
- About 25 minutes to Domwe, about 45 minutes to Mumbo
- Season
- Year-round, but crossings are weather-dependent and the lake can be too rough for the small boats during strong winds
- Booking
- Central Reservations on +27 82 785 4294 or letsgo@kayakafrica.co.za; full payment is due seven days in advance. Day visitors can ask at the beach reception

- 07Village boat trips to Thumbi West Island and Otter Pointboat
Chembe beach out to Thumbi West Island and round to Otter Point, a few kilometres in each case, usually as a half or full day with snorkelling and a fish barbecue on a beach
- Where
- Every lodge reception on the beachfront books one, and the beach boys will offer the same trip cheaper while you are walking the sand. The boats are open wooden launches run by village guides; snorkels are supplied. Wikivoyage is blunt that beach boys can be pushy and will sometimes come back for more money afterwards, so fix the price, the hours and who pays the park fee before you leave the shore
- When
- Daily on demand, normally leaving mid-morning around 09:00 and back early afternoon
- Fare (2026)
- From US$35 per person for a group of two to four, plus the Lake Malawi National Park fee of US$10 per person. Self-hire kayaks are US$15 single and US$25 double. A 2-hour sunset cruise on a lodge catamaran is US$25 per person and a 4-hour half-day cruise US$40
- Takes
- Half a day, roughly 4 hours; full-day versions run to about 6 hours
- Season
- Year-round. Trips are called off when the lake is rough, which is most likely during the Mwera wind season
- Booking
- At a lodge reception, cash only, or directly with a guide on the beach

- Where
- Arrange before you fly. Thumbi View runs private transfers from the airport to its Cape Maclear lodges and between partner lodges; Kayak Africa will pre-arrange a road transfer from an airport, another lodge or a national park; Malambe Camp also advertises airport transfers. For the charter, you book the aircraft and the ground leg together through the lodge or a Malawi operator
- When
- On request, any day
- Fare (2024)
- Quoted per vehicle or per aircraft on request – no published rate. For scale, the short Monkey Bay to Chembe private vehicle is around MK30,000 (about US$18)

- Season
- Year-round

Not yet confirmed: Correction to the brief: the 18 km from the Monkey Bay road down to Chembe is no longer a dirt road. Kayak Africa describes it as newly tarred nearly the whole way, and Wikivoyage says Cape Maclear has tarmac road leading into town. Only the last kilometre of village road, past the national park gates, is still unpaved.; Correction to the brief: the MV Ilala was not simply running late in this period. The government grounded it in November 2025 on safety grounds, terminated the private operator's contract and repossessed the ship. It was sailing again by June 2026 under a new state company, Malawi Lake Services, and in July and September 2026 Malawi signed deals for replacement vessels. Anyone planning a 2026 or 2027 trip should confirm the ship is running before travelling to Monkey Bay for it.; No current MV Ilala passenger fare could be confirmed. The only operator fare sheet online is priced November 2014, and the newest class prices found are 2021 figures for the short Nkhata Bay to Likoma leg. Malawi kwacha inflation since then is large, so treat both as historical. Ask at the Monkey Bay port office or on +265 881 13 46 35.; No source was found confirming whether the published 2017 Ilala timetable is still the one in force under Malawi Lake Services, or whether the Friday 08:00 Monkey Bay departure has moved.; Bicycle taxis: none could be confirmed as an actual transport option in or out of Chembe. Wikivoyage describes the village as small enough to walk and mentions a motorbike, not a bicycle, for the Monkey Bay leg. Malawi's kabaza trade is both bicycle and motorbike depending on the town; ask at the Monkey Bay terminus.; Dugout canoes: they are everywhere on this stretch of shore and Wikivoyage photographs them at Cape Maclear, but nothing was found showing them being hired as passenger transport at a stated price, as opposed to being fishing craft. Beach boys sell canoe trips informally; no rate found.; No published fare or timetable was found for the Monkey Bay to Chembe shared pickups from an operator or government source – the MK5,000 and MK30,000 figures come from a lodge's travel page last updated June 2024.; Whether any coach currently runs through to Monkey Bay is unclear. Wikivoyage says the AXA service seems not to be running as of 2026 and mentions a Kwezy bus without detail; neither operator publishes a Monkey Bay timetable. Confirm at the City Mall offices in Lilongwe.; Fuel shortages are documented at national level for 2025 and 2026 (large price jumps in October 2025 and January 2026, reported shortages in May 2026) but no source was found linking a specific shortage to suspended minibus or boat services at Cape Maclear itself..
