Cairo Geniza
Collection of Jewish manuscript fragments

Cairo Geniza

The Cairo Geniza, alternatively spelled the Cairo Genizah, is a collection of some 400,000 Jewish manuscript fragments and Fatimid administrative documents that were kept in the genizah or storeroom of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Fustat or Old Cairo, Egypt.

These manuscripts span the entire period of Middle-Eastern, North African, and Andalusian Jewish history between the 6th and 19th centuries CE, and comprise the largest and most diverse collection of medieval manuscripts in the world.

How locals move

Getting around Cairo Geniza the local way

  • Get inWhen seeking transport, ask for "Haram" and shape your hands like a pyramid by making an upside down Victory sign with your index and middle finger: people, especially minibus drivers will know where you want to go.
  • Get inAs of 2025, the metro is being extended towards the pyramids and the entire road is a construction project, so it can be somewhat of a maze to find the buses and minibuses that can take you toward the pyramids.
  • Get inInstead just point yourself in the direction of the main east-west road and once you find the road walk west until you see minibuses or people waiting impatiently for one.
