Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a large primeval forest located in south-western Uganda and is located in three districts of Kisoro, Kabale and Kanungu.
The Bwindi forest is on the edge of the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift, at elevations ranging from 1,160 to 2,607 metres. The forest contains around 160 species of trees and over 100 species of ferns. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Reserve was set up in 1942 on the rim of the Rift Valley.
Getting around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park the local way
Bwindi has four trailheads – Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo – separated by hours of winding murram road, and your gorilla permit names one of them, so the road you take is decided before you leave Kampala: coach to Kabale, Kisoro or Butogota, then a hired 4WD, a matatu or a boda-boda for the last stretch, or a flight to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip with a lodge vehicle waiting.
- 01UWA gorilla permit – it fixes your sector and your roadpermit
Booked in Kampala or through a tour operator, used at one named trailhead: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo
- Where
- Uganda Wildlife Authority reservations, Plot 7 Kira Road, Kamwokya, Kampala, or reservations@wildlife.go.ug. Foreign non-resident and rest-of-Africa permits can only be booked through a licensed tour operator; UWA points to the operator list at utb.go.ug. There is no point travelling to Bwindi without one – you will be refused entry. Each permit is tied to one habituated gorilla group at one trailhead, so once it is issued the sector, and therefore the road and the lodge, are fixed. Buhoma and Nkuringo are on opposite sides of the forest and swapping late means a half-day drive.
- When
- Eight permits per gorilla group per day. Bwindi's habituated groups are split between the four trailheads, so a given day's supply is not interchangeable between sectors.
- Fare (2024)
- US$800 foreign non-resident, US$700 foreign resident, US$500 rest of Africa, UGX 300,000 East African citizen. Gorilla habituation experience US$1,500 / US$1,000 / UGX 750,000. Rates include the guide fee and park entrance for the day.
- Takes
- Registration at the trailhead from 07:30, briefing 08:00, tracking starts 08:30. The trek itself runs from a couple of hours to a whole day, with one hour at the gorillas.
- Season
- Book far ahead in the dry seasons. UWA and guides note permits can sometimes be had a day or two out in the rainy months. Minimum age 15.
- Booking
- UWA reservations office or a licensed tour operator. Payment by mobile money, card at a point of sale, or bank transfer.

- 02Kampala coaches to Kabale – for Ruhija, and the Kanungu road to Buhomabus
Kampala via Masaka, Mbarara and Ntungamo to Kabale
- Where
- Gateway, Bismarkan, Abapakasi and Jaguar all run the route from the Kampala coach stages; Kigali-bound buses such as Trinity and Volcano stop in Kabale too and cost more. The Post Bus is the easiest to find: big red 67-seat buses from the central post office on Kampala Road, and you can flag it down anywhere on the route or buy from the conductor. Kabale is the change point for Ruhija – the turning north off the surfaced Kabale–Kisoro highway is 18 km beyond Kabale town.
- When
- Post Bus departs Monday to Saturday at 07:00. Bookaway shows other departures spread between 08:00 and 18:00.
- Fare (2026)
- USh 40,000 typical on Gateway, Bismarkan, Abapakasi or Jaguar, up to USh 60,000 on a Kigali bus (Wikivoyage, page rewritten August 2026). Bookaway lists US$12–23. The Post Bus fare quoted on Wikivoyage is USh 25,000 but that figure dates from 2015.
- Takes
- About 7 hours on Wikivoyage's figure; Bookaway lists 8 hours over 337 km; UWA counts 414 km of tarmac and about 6 hours
- Season
- Year-round; the Kampala–Kabale road is surfaced the whole way
- Booking
- At the operator's office or the post office for the Post Bus, where booking ahead guarantees a seat; Bookaway sells some services online

- 03Kampala coaches to Kisoro – for Rushaga and Nkuringobus
Kampala via Masaka, Mbarara and Kabale to Kisoro
- Where
- The Post Bus leaves the central Kampala post office on Kampala Road at 07:00; the ticket office is inside, through the courtyard. Coming back, Baby Coaches and Gateway Bus Service run night buses out of Kisoro. Most visitors to the southern sectors sleep in Kisoro or at Lake Mutanda and drive up to the trailhead the next morning.
- When
- Post Bus Monday to Saturday 07:00. Bookaway counts four operators with departures between 07:00 and 20:00, including overnight services.
- Fare (2026)
- Bookaway lists US$19–30 (2026). Wikivoyage quotes USh 30,000 for the Post Bus, USh 25,000 on the Baby Coaches night bus and USh 20,000 on Gateway, but those figures are old.
- Takes
- About 10 hours on the Post Bus. Bookaway lists 7–10 hours over 367 km.
- Season
- Year-round; surfaced all the way, narrow and winding past Kabale
- Booking
- Book ahead at the post office for a guaranteed Post Bus seat, or buy at the Kisoro stage for the night buses

- 04Direct Kampala bus to Butogota – the budget way to Buhomabus
Kampala to Butogota in Kanungu district, about 450 km, then 17 km on to Buhoma
- Where
- Muhabura and Savanah run through to Butogota. Departures are early, around 06:00, and a full bus may pull out before its stated time. Schedules and prices are not published and several companies compete from different terminals, so get someone you trust to walk you to the right stage. From Butogota, boda-bodas handle short hops and you charter a vehicle for the rough road to Buhoma. There is a bus back from Butogota to Kampala, morning and overnight.
- When
- Daily, departing early morning
- Fare (2026)
- Not published; agree it at the stage
- Takes
- 8–10 hours to Butogota depending on the road
- Season
- The last stretch is murram. In the rains it turns to mud and buses as well as cars get stuck.
- Booking
- At the terminal on the day; arrive early

- 05Special-hire 4WD from Kabale or Kisoro to the four trailheadsprivate hire
Kabale to Ruhija and Buhoma, Kabale to Nkuringo, Kisoro to Rushaga and Nkuringo, or Kihihi and Butogota to Buhoma
- Where
- Special-hire cars wait at the Kabale and Kisoro taxi stages and outside the hotels; lodges will send their own vehicle if you ask when booking. Allow a whole extra day for this leg – Wikivoyage's advice is to leave early in the morning and treat it as a separate day of travel. UWA recommends a 4WD for every approach.
- When
- On demand, negotiated per vehicle rather than per seat. There is no scheduled service to any of the trailheads.
- Fare (2026)
- Not published; negotiated with the driver or billed by the lodge as a park transfer
- Takes
- Kabale – Ruhija – Buhoma about 95 km and around 4 hours. Kabale – Kanungu – Kanyantorogo – Buhoma about 120 km and around 5 hours after the tarmac ends. Kabale – Nkuringo about 105 km and around 4 hours. Kisoro – Nkuringo 35 km and at least an hour to an hour and a half. Ishasha in Queen Elizabeth to Buhoma about 62–64 km on dirt.
- Season
- Murram throughout. Untarred roads in the south-west can be impassable when wet, and any vehicle including a bus can get stuck in the mud.
- Booking
- Agreed at the stage the day before, or arranged with the lodge

- 06Boda-boda for the last stretchboda boda
Butogota to Buhoma, Kisoro up to Rushaga or Nkuringo, and short hops around each trailhead
- Where
- Riders wait at the Butogota trading centre, the Kisoro taxi stage and outside the lodges. This is the cheapest way to cover the final murram leg if you have light luggage, and often the only thing moving after the last matatu. Agree the price before getting on. Fatal accidents involving boda-bodas are common and the roads here are steep and loose.
- When
- On demand through daylight hours
- Fare (2014)
- Not published for the Bwindi trailheads. For scale, Wikivoyage priced a boda-boda from Kisoro to the Mgahinga park entrances at about USh 15,000 for an hour's ride in 2014, and self-drive motorcycle hire in Kisoro at USh 20,000–30,000 a day.
- Takes
- Well under an hour for Butogota to Buhoma; an hour or more for the climbs out of Kisoro
- Season
- Daylight only, and unpleasant or impossible on wet murram
- Booking
- None, agree the fare first

- 07Flights to Kihihi and Kisoro airstripsscheduled flight
Entebbe International, or Kajjansi airfield near Kampala, to Kihihi airstrip for Buhoma and Ruhija, or Kisoro airstrip for Rushaga and Nkuringo
- Where
- Aerolink Uganda is the scheduled operator; Savannah Wings also flies the route. Pick the airstrip by the sector on your permit – Kihihi for the northern trailheads, Kisoro for the southern ones. A 4WD still has to meet you and drive you to the lodge over murram, so the transfer must be arranged before you fly. Kisoro airstrip is just over 2 km east of the town, with a paved runway that crosses the main road.
- When
- Daily scheduled flights to both airstrips, plus charters
- Fare (2026)
- Not published on the operator's public pages
- Takes
- About 1 hour 10 minutes in the air, then one to three hours by road to the trailhead depending on sector
- Season
- Year-round. The road transfer at the far end is the part the rains affect, not the flight.
- Booking
- Aerolink Uganda, info@aerolinkuganda.com or +256 31 7333000, usually through the lodge or tour operator

- 08Buhoma – Nkuringo long walk through the forestwalking trail
Buhoma trailhead in the north-west to Nkuringo in the south, straight through the park
- Where
- Booked as a guided UWA activity at the Buhoma or Nkuringo park office. It is the only direct link between the northern and southern sectors that does not involve the long road round, and it is worth knowing about if your plans put you on the wrong side of the forest. A separate guided long walk runs from Rushaga.
- When
- Arranged on request; UWA schedules park walks to start at 09:00 or 14:00
- Fare (2024)
- US$60 foreign non-resident, US$50 foreign resident, UGX 50,000 East African citizen
- Takes
- A full day on foot; your luggage has to go round by road
- Season
- Muddy and slow in the rains; boots needed year-round
- Booking
- At the UWA office at either end, or through a lodge

Not yet confirmed: The UWA conservation tariff carrying the US$800 gorilla permit ran July 2024 to June 2026. A 'Tariff changes 2026-2027' document is linked from ugandawildlife.org/uwa-rates but is a scanned image with no extractable text, so the rate in force from July 2026 could not be read. Confirm with UWA reservations before quoting a price.; No named matatu service could be confirmed between Kabale or Kisoro and any of the four trailheads. UWA, Wikivoyage and the lodges all describe the last leg as private hire, a lodge vehicle or a boda-boda. Wikivoyage's Bwindi page says only 'you'll need to get transportation to Butogota, and from there to Buhoma'. Treat scheduled matatus to the sectors as unconfirmed.; Boda-boda and special-hire fares to the Bwindi trailheads are not published anywhere that could be fetched. The only priced comparison found is a 2014 Kisoro–Mgahinga figure, kept here as scale only.; Aerolink Uganda's site blocks direct fetching of its timetable and fare pages, so no flight times, days or prices to Kihihi and Kisoro could be recorded – only UWA's statement that both are served daily from Entebbe and that flights last about 1 hour 10 minutes. Savannah Wings has no reachable site beyond a Facebook page.; Jaguar Executive Coaches, Post Bus Uganda and Uganda Post have no reachable websites, so their current Kampala–Kabale and Kampala–Kisoro timetables and fares could not be checked at source. Post Bus figures on Wikivoyage date from 2015; the Kabale figures were rewritten by a local contributor in August 2026.; Lodges publish road times by sector in marketing copy but the ones checked – Buhoma Lodge, Bwindi Lodge, Gorilla Safari Lodge, Broadbill Forest Camp, Nkuringo – carry no directions page that could be fetched, and none publish a transfer price. Ask the lodge directly for the vehicle cost.; No 2023-or-later source was found on the current state of the Kanungu and Kanyantorogo murram roads or on any road works. The rainy-season warnings here are general Ugandan road advice from Wikivoyage plus UWA's standing 4WD recommendation..
