Ataşehir

Ataşehir is a municipality and district of Istanbul, Turkey.

Its area is 25 km2, and its population is 423,127 (2022). It is located at the junction of the O-2 and O-4 motorways on the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul. Its neighbours are the districts of Ümraniye to the north, Sancaktepe to the northeast, Maltepe to the east, Kadıköy to the south and Üsküdar to the west.

    Sabiha Gökçen Airport

    This has many domestic and international flights and is more convenient for the east of the city, and less congested.

    Pendik Train Station

    High speed YHT trains from Istanbul stop at Pendik on their way east to Eskişehir, where the track forks for Ankara or Konya.

    Dudullu Bus Terminal

    This has good connections to all parts of Turkey, as many long-distance coaches start at Anadolu Otogar, circle the city, then call at Dudullu before continuing east.

    Damatris is better known as Demeter, Grecian god of agriculture and fertility, and this hunting lodge - cum - country palace was built for Tiberius II Constantine (ruled 578-582 AD).

Where to eat

Inexpensive çiğ köfte, döner, fish & bread, kokoreç, patso and fast food shops are found everywhere. The AVMs - shopping centres - all have a range of eating places. On the seafront, carts sell corn and simit and tavuk & pilav (rice with chicken). City-run restaurants such as Sosyal Tesis or Kent Lokantası also serve affordable meals.

Getting around Ataşehir the local way

  • Get inNo bridge, tunnel or airstrip so you get here by ferry from Istanbul city.
  • Get inMavi Marmara ferries sail hourly from Bostancı to Heybeliada and Büyükada.
  • Get inIDO ferries sail further out to the Marmara Islands and don't call at the Princes' Islands.
  • Get inYassıada has no ferry but is being converted into a museum island, so boat trips or heli-tours may visit.
  • Get aroundBetween islands, the ferries are frequent enough for day-trips.
  • Get aroundMost islands' sights are close to their ferry piers, so walking is the default transport.
  • Get aroundİETT electric minibuses potter round Büyükada: BA-2 runs every 10 mins to Birlik Meydanı.
  • Get aroundOn Heybeliada, minibuses HA-2 and HA-3 run round the coast.
