Getting around Abkhazia the local way
The only workable way in is from Russia at the Psou River near Adler, on an Abkhaz entry permit applied for online in advance; the Enguri bridge from Georgia can be crossed inbound but not used to leave, and using Russia's crossing at all makes the traveller inadmissible to Georgia afterward.
- 01Abkhaz entry permit / visa clearancepermit
Online application to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sukhum, before travel
- Where
- Fill in the application form at mfaapsny.org/en/consular-service/permission/ (a copy of your passport photo page, sent as a JPG, plus the form fields) and send to visa@mfaapsny.org, or use the online form on the same page
- When
- on demand; apply at least a week ahead
- Fare (2026)
- the ministry's own consular fee page prices everything in roubles, under the 2000 state duty law as amended 6 April 2016. An ordinary tourist visa – the one a visitor normally needs – is 350 rub for up to one month and 700 rub for up to six months, whether single, double or multiple entry. The official, private and business scale is higher: single entry 700 rub up to 10 days, 1400 rub up to one month, 2100 rub up to three months, 4200 rub up to six months, 5600 rub up to one year
- Takes
- processing takes about 7 working days; faster for repeat visitors
- Season
- year-round
- Booking
- compulsory: without an emailed Entry Permit / clearance you cannot pass either checkpoint; on arrival you must also report to the Consular Department within 3 working days to receive the stamped visa

- Fare (2026)

- Takes
- border formalities alone can take 1.5–2 hours in summer on foot

- 03Enguri bridge crossing at Zugdidi (Georgia side) – entry only, do not use to leaveborder crossing
Zugdidi railway station to the Enguri/Ingur bridge, then Gal (Georgian: Gali) inside Abkhazia
- Where
- Marshrutka or taxi from Zugdidi station to the bridge, Georgian police checkpoint, walk the several-hundred-metre bridge, then the Abkhaz checkpoints; the Georgian side does not open before about 10:00 while it calls Tbilisi for clearance. On the Abkhaz side of the bridge there are marshrutkas (50 руб) and taxis (350–400 руб, Oct 2013) to Gal, and from Gal a marshrutka to Sukhum was 250 руб with roughly hourly departures (Aug 2018); going back, direct marshrutkas leave Sukhum train station at 09:10 and 11:10
- When
- checkpoints open 8am to 7pm per the Abkhaz foreign ministry; subject to sudden closure by the de facto Abkhaz border service without notice, sometimes for weeks
- Fare (2018)
- marshrutka to the bridge 1 GEL from Zugdidi station, or a taxi at 10 GEL negotiable down to 8; both dated Aug 2018 on the source page, so treat as stale
- Takes
- walk across the bridge plus waiting for clearance; no fixed time
- Season
- year-round when open; the de facto side has imposed unannounced temporary closures, for example around Georgian opposition rallies
- Booking
- the Abkhaz entry permit is required on this side too, presented at the Abkhaz checkpoint

- 04The legal asymmetry: Russia in is easy, but forecloses Georgia, and Georgia out is not allowedservice status
governs which direction each land crossing can be used
- Where
- not a vehicle, a rule: crossing at Psou (Russia) is straightforward but Georgia treats it as illegal entry to Georgian territory without clearing a Georgian checkpoint, a criminal offence under Georgia's law on occupied territories; this in effect means a Psou entrant should also exit via Russia, not attempt to leave via Enguri. Entering via Enguri from Georgia is workable, but Wikivoyage's own current text separately cautions that the Georgian-Abkhaz crossing station has been closed since 2020 and remains closed as of 2025, which contradicts the detailed how-to it publishes for that same route – the article does not reconcile the two, so treat the Enguri route as unconfirmed open/closed on any given date and verify locally or with the Georgian side before relying on it to leave

- not confirmed by any source read for this file; ask at an RZD ticket office

- 07Moscow (Vnukovo) – Sukhum flightsscheduled flight
Moscow Vnukovo Airport to Sukhum (Babushara) Airport (IATA: SUI)
- Where
- Book with the Russian carrier UVT Aero; the airport is about 20 km from Sukhum
- When
- regular scheduled flights running since 1 May 2025; frequency not confirmed by a source read here
- Fare (2026)
- not confirmed by any source read for this file
- Takes
- not confirmed here
- Season
- the 1 May 2025 start of regular UVT Aero service is documented, as is a February 2025 test flight, the first in 32 years to an airport ICAO had kept closed. The most recent source found is an April 2026 digest in which the de facto leader thanks Moscow for the airport's relaunch – that is not the same as a published 2026 timetable, and none was found
- Booking
- no international legal status: Georgia's Civil Aviation Agency states no airline may legally operate international flights to this airport, and the EU has condemned the flights as a violation of Georgian sovereignty, so onward connections through recognised international carriers are not available here

Not yet confirmed: The visa fee is quoted in two currencies by two sources and nothing found reconciles them. The Wikivoyage Abkhazia article lists single-entry visas at US$10 for 10 days rising to US$40 for a year; the ministry's own consular fee page prices everything in roubles and puts an ordinary tourist visa at 350 rub for a month. Wikivoyage separately reports a traveller paying 400 rub for a ten-day stay in August 2018, which is close to the rouble scale and nothing like US$10. Ask the Consular Department which line applies to the visa type you are issued.; The Enguri/Ingur crossing's current open/closed status is unresolved: the Abkhazia Wikivoyage article's own caution box claims the crossing station 'has been closed since 2020, and remains closed as of 2025', directly beside detailed how-to instructions (dated 2013–2018) for using it. Neither statement is dated later than 2025 and the article does not reconcile them. This file does not resolve the contradiction – ask the Georgian consulate, the Zugdidi tourism office, or a recent traveller before planning a Georgia-side entry or exit.; No confirmed passenger fare, frequency, or current timetable was found for the Moscow/St.Petersburg–Sukhum sleeper train beyond the two conflicting Wikivoyage figures ('year-round daily' vs 'at least twice a week') – check RZD's own booking system (pass.rzd.ru; the site did not respond within this session's time budget) before travelling.; No fare or exact flight frequency was found for the UVT Aero Moscow–Sukhum service; UVT Aero's own site (uvtaero.ru) returned a 404 for the flights page checked in this session.; The Sochi–Gagra summer boat's 2026 operating dates and current operator were not confirmed; the only figures found are an undated fare and a schedule with no named operator.; No informal transport (share taxi, off-road 4x4, hitching) up to Lake Ritsa or the Msui area was documented by any source read here beyond the general 'tour operators offer trips' line; nothing found on a public bus to Ritsa.; The prompt's premise that infrastructure is 'patchy and unrepaired since the war' is broadly consistent with what was found (a burned-down main post office never rebuilt, described roads and a naval blockade) but no single current source was found quantifying this; treat it as generally true rather than sourced to one document..
The field note on Abkhazia reads this entry in full, one option at a time, with every source beside it.
