Sharpeville is one of the oldest of six townships in the Vaal Triangle. It was named after John Lillie Sharpe who came to South Africa from Glasgow, Scotland, as secretary of Stewarts & Lloyds. Sharpe was elected to the Vereeniging City Council in 1932 and held the position of mayor from 1934 to 1937.

The Boipatong Memorial and Youth Heritage Centre is a South African heritage site and community center located in the township of Boipatong, near Vanderbijlpark in the Gauteng Province. The center was established to honor the victims of the Boipatong massacre, which took place on 17 June 1992, and to serve as a hub for local youth development, skills training, and historical education.
