Salta is the capital and largest city in the Argentine province of the same name. With a population of 627,704 according to the 2022 census, it is also the 7th most-populous city in Argentina. The city serves as the cultural and economic center of the Valle de Lerma Metropolitan Area, which is home to over 50.9% of the population of Salta Province and also includes the municipalities of La Caldera, Vaqueros, Campo Quijano, Rosario de Lerma, Cerrillos, La Merced and San Lorenzo. Salta is the seat of the Capital Department, the most populous department in the province.

    The Museum of High Altitude Archaeology is an archaeology museum located in the historical center of Salta, Argentina, which conserves and exhibits collections related to the Capacocha child sacrifice ceremonies performed by the Inca in the high peaks of the Andes, mainly the Children of Llullaillaco mummies discovered in 1999 at the top of the Llullaillaco volcano. Inaugurated in 2004, the museum was specially created by the government of Salta Province to preserve and display the Llullaillaco findings, and during its first years it exhibited only a few artifacts, as it had to develop a unique exhibition system to correctly display and preserve the mummies that would not be completed until 2007.

El Buen Gusto Empanadas, O'Higgins St 575,. Go very local with this hidden gem for empanadas. A very traditional small, simple restaurant, that offers the best empanadas in Salta. You should call in advance to order the food (before 21:00) since they cook a limited number of empanadas. La Céfira, 481 Cordoba. They serve very nice pastas and sauces. Good value for the price.
