South Uist and the southern Outer Hebrides

The causeways built between 1942 and 2002 turned Eriskay, South Uist, Benbecula and North Uist into one road island, so most people now drive its spine, the A865/A867, rather than take a separate boat to each part. The two remaining ferries sit at the two ends of that spine: CalMac's Mallaig – Lochboisdale run, an open Atlantic crossing that switches to a slower Oban service and a thinner timetable every winter, and the short Ardmhor (Barra) – Eriskay hop, the busiest and most reliable link, five times a day even on a Sunday. Benbecula airport, a few minutes off the spine, adds a daily Glasgow flight and weekday Stornoway hops. Hebridean Transport's W16/W17 buses run the length of the road and are timed to meet the boats and the school day rather than the clock, and a phone-booked minibus covers the handful of communities the spine bus misses. Road Equivalent Tariff has applied here since 2008, so fares are low and mileage-based; the trade-off is that summer car space on the Mallaig boat sells out. Both crossings and the airport are routinely disrupted by Atlantic gales, and South Uist and Eriskay's Catholic character means, unlike Presbyterian Lewis and Harris further north, some shops and buses run on a Sunday.

How transport works here

11 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around South Uist: two by water, three by road, two by air and one under your own steam, from 20 sources. Three entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. One of them runs only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be. One needs a phone call or a message before you turn up.

The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 6 of the 11 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 28 September 2026, and ends with eight things we could not confirm.

CalMac Lochboisdale – Mallaig

Lochboisdale Pier, South Uist to Mallaig, Lochaber (summer); Lochboisdale to Oban via a different routing in deep winter

Lochboisdale is signposted off the A865 in the southeast corner of South Uist; the terminal is a small building with a café and the departure board. The ship is MV Lord of the Isles, the only vessel on this run. Foot passengers and vehicles should book ahead through calmac.co.uk even in the quiet season, and check in in good time, since this is an open-sea crossing and boarding can be brought forward or held for weather. Mallaig at the other end has a direct rail link to Fort William and Glasgow, so the ferry timetable and the West Highland Line trains are worth checking together before booking.

When
One round trip most days in autumn 2026: live sailings checked for the first week of October showed a single daily departure from Lochboisdale, alternating between an early (04:45 or 08:30–08:40 UK time) and a lunchtime (12:55–13:05) departure. From 1 November 2026 the Mallaig service was not selling at all in the live booking data for the following week; a same-week check found only two Oban – Lochboisdale sailings, Wednesday and Friday, confirming Wikivoyage's account of a winter switch to Oban that misses Tuesday and Thursday
Takes
About 3 hours 30 minutes Mallaig – Lochboisdale; around 5 hours 30 minutes on the winter Oban routing
Fare 2026
Not confirmed for 2026 – the booking engine needs a live session and no public fare table for this specific route could be reached. Road Equivalent Tariff applies, so the fare is distance-based and lower than pre-2008, but no adult single figure is recorded here; check at booking

SeasonYear-round. Summer sails from Mallaig; deep winter (checked for the first week of November 2026) drops to about two sailings a week from Oban instead, a slower and less frequent substitute rather than an add-on. Bookingcalmac.co.uk or the Customer Engagement Centre; book ahead, including as a foot passenger, since this route has sold out before. Run byCaledonian MacBrayne (CalMac), vessel MV Lord of the Isles.

CalMac Ardmhor (Barra) – Eriskay

Ardmhor slipway, north Barra to Eriskay ferry terminal, south of the Eriskay causeway

Ardmhor is a small slipway a short drive from Castlebay on Barra, sharing a car park with the shore where Barra's beach-landing planes taxi. Eriskay's terminal is a plain waiting-room cabin with toilets and no shop or village nearby – the causeway to South Uist is a few minutes' drive north. The crossing is short enough that this is the route most people actually rely on day to day, connecting Barra's Castlebay to the rest of the road network. Bikes are carried free but should be booked, per Wikivoyage.

When
Five round trips Monday to Saturday year-round; live sailings checked for the first week of October 2026 showed five departures from Ardmhor on a weekday (roughly 06:00, 08:25, 10:10, 14:45, 16:30 UK time) and three on the Sunday checked (11:10, 14:45, 16:30), matching Wikivoyage's 'five Apr–Oct and two Nov–Mar' Sunday pattern closely enough to trust the shape, though the exact Sunday count may vary by season

Road Equivalent Tariff and the causeways that replaced the old inter-island ferries

Eriskay – South Uist – Benbecula – North Uist – Berneray

Two separate policies decide most of what this file describes. First, the causeways: the Sound of Eriskay causeway (opened 2001) and the earlier South Uist – Benbecula and Benbecula – North Uist links replaced small inter-island ferries with a single road, so the only ferries left in the southern Outer Hebrides are the two long-haul ones to the mainland and to Barra, described elsewhere in this file. Second, Road Equivalent Tariff: the Scottish Government's own account of the policy names 'a pilot on routes to the Western Isles, Coll and Tiree in October 2008', so – contrary to any assumption that RET is Clyde-only – it has applied to Lochboisdale and Ardmhor–Eriskay since that pilot, unlike Orkney's Northern Isles routes, which never had it. RET replaced a cost-recovery fare model with one pegged to the equivalent cost of driving the same distance by road, cutting fares sharply from 2008.

Atlantic gales and technical faults cancel the Lochboisdale boat, and CalMac's live status is the only way to know

Lochboisdale – Mallaig/Oban and Ardmhor – Eriskay

Both routes were carrying a live 'be aware' status on CalMac's own systems on 28 September 2026, the day this file was checked, which is itself a demonstration of how routinely these open Atlantic and Sound-of-Barra crossings are disrupted. A BBC News report from spring 2026 covered a spell of cancellations serious enough that a Uist accommodation owner said cancellations had become constant; South Uist's tourism trade depends on the boat running as much as its transport does. The decision to sail or not sits with the vessel master, using CalMac's own weather guidance, exactly as on other West Coast routes.

When
Checked daily; both routes were flagged BE_AWARE as of 28 September 2026
Takes
A single weather cancellation typically costs a day; a spring 2026 run of cancellations lasted weeks
Fare 2026
No charge to check. CalMac's passenger rights policy applies when a sailing is cancelled

SeasonWorst in autumn and winter gales, but the spring 2026 disruption shows it is not confined to winter. Run byCalMac.

Sunday in the southern Hebrides is not like Lewis and Harris

South Uist and Eriskay

Unlike the Presbyterian, sabbatarian north of the island chain, South Uist and Eriskay are historically Roman Catholic, so Wikivoyage's account of the wider Hebrides is explicit that 'you may find shops open after midday on a Sunday' here, in contrast to Lewis and Harris where 'almost nothing stirs'. That does not extend to the buses: the W16/W17 spine service and the Stornoway-to-Lochboisdale linked run both operate Monday to Saturday only, so a Sunday traveller without a car is limited to the ferries (both of which sail Sundays, Ardmhor–Eriskay more reliably than Lochboisdale) and whatever is open in the villages.

Hebridean Transport W16/W17 spine bus, Berneray to Eriskay

Balivanich (Benbecula) south through South Uist to Lochboisdale and Eriskay Slipway (W17); Berneray and North Uist to Balivanich (W16)

The W17 timetable published by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar lists every stop down the spine road from Benbecula Airport through Creagorry, Carnan, Howmore, Daliburgh, Lochboisdale and on to Eriskay Slipway, run by D.A. Travel (01878 700599). Several stops are request-only ('x', booked by 17:00 the previous day) and one working from Lochboisdale needs booking directly from the marina. The timetable is built around school times and the ferries: mid-morning departures are timed to meet the Ardmhor–Eriskay boat, and several journeys run only on school days or only in school holidays, so the same clock time can mean a different bus depending on the date.

When
Roughly six departures a day Monday to Saturday on the core Benbecula–Lochboisdale–Eriskay corridor in the timetable valid to 18 October 2026, with extra school-day-only short workings; no Sunday service
Takes
Benbecula Airport to Eriskay Slipway about 1 hour 30 minutes end to end on the through journeys
Fare 2026
Distance banded: £1.40 for the shortest hop up to £9.80 for the longest single (Berneray to Eriskay), per the 2026 Western Isles bus fare convertor chart; adult return and 10-journey prices are listed on the same chart

SeasonYear-round, Monday to Saturday. BookingNone for most stops; request stops ('x') must be booked by 17:00 the previous day, and the Lochboisdale Marina stop ('m') must be booked the same way. Run byD.A. Travel for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council).

West Coast Motors / Hebridean Transport, Stornoway to Lochboisdale island-hopper

Stornoway (Lewis) via Tarbert (Harris), Lochmaddy (North Uist) and Balivanich (Benbecula) to Lochboisdale (South Uist), and on by ferry to Eriskay onward

This is a chain of separate bus routes and ferries rather than one ticket, timed so a single day's travel is just possible. Southbound, Wikivoyage's account gives a Stornoway departure by early afternoon reaching Tarbert, Lochmaddy, Benbecula and Lochboisdale by evening; northbound the return leaves Lochboisdale by mid-morning to reach Stornoway in the late afternoon. Missing one connecting sailing or bus, especially the inter-island ferries further north, breaks the whole day.

When
Once a day each direction, Monday to Saturday; no Sunday service
Takes
About 9 hours end to end, Stornoway to Lochboisdale
Fare 2026
Not confirmed – covered piecemeal by the individual operator fares (see the W17 fare chart for the South Uist legs); no single through fare found

SeasonYear-round, Monday to Saturday. BookingNone for the scheduled legs; check individual route timetables for request stops. Run byMultiple operators under Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Western Isles bus network, including D.A. Travel and West Coast Motors.

East Gerinish and Uiskevagh demand-responsive minibus (W19D)

East Gerinish, Lochcarnan, Uiskevagh, Petersport and Hacklet (off the spine road, east side of South Uist/Benbecula) to Balivanich shops, banks, post office and Griminish Surgery

This is the answer for the crofting townships east of the main road that the W17 spine bus does not reach. It only runs if someone books it: phone 01870 603197 by 18:00 the day before. The operator, W. Macvicar, adjusts the exact departure to suit whoever has booked, so the printed times are approximate rather than fixed.

When
On demand, Tuesday and Thursday only; departs East Gerinish at approximately 10:00 with a return around 11:45, adjusted to bookings
Takes
Not stated – a short hop to Balivanich and back within the same morning
Fare 2026

Loganair Glasgow – Benbecula, and Stornoway – Benbecula

Glasgow Airport to Benbecula Airport (BEB); Stornoway (Lewis) to Benbecula, weekdays

Benbecula Airport sits just north of the causeway from South Uist, a short drive from Lionacleit and the W16/W17 bus stop outside it. Loganair's own booking page for Benbecula lists live one-way fares; car hire at the airport is the nearest option for anyone without their own vehicle. The Stornoway link is a short intra-island hop rather than a mainland connection, useful for travelling the length of the Hebrides without the road-and-ferry chain.

When
Daily from Glasgow; Monday to Friday from Stornoway, about 35 minutes, per Wikivoyage – not independently confirmed on Loganair's own site, which does not publish a schedule grid on the page checked
Takes
About 1 hour Glasgow – Benbecula; about 35 minutes Stornoway – Benbecula
Fare 2026
Glasgow – Benbecula one-way fares were showing from £141 on Loganair's own booking page for a November 2026 date (checked 2026-09-28); this is a live lowest-fare figure, not a fixed tariff, and will vary by date and how far ahead you book

scheduled flight

Loganair Glasgow – Barra beach landing, as the fallback for the Uists

Glasgow Airport to Barra Airport (Traigh Mhòr beach), then bus and the Ardmhor–Eriskay ferry to South Uist

Barra's airport is the beach itself, Traigh Mhòr, so flights are tide-dependent and the runway simply is not there at high water; a bus links Barra Airport to Castlebay and on to Ardmhor for the Eriskay ferry. Wikivoyage's advice is blunt: the Barra plane carries only 15 kg of checked baggage and flies the same weather-dependent route as Benbecula's, so a cancelled Benbecula flight usually means a cancelled Barra one too, and this is a fallback in name more than in practice.

When
Daily, tide-dependent timing set close to the day of travel
Takes
About 1 hour Glasgow – Barra, then bus and a 40-minute ferry on to South Uist
Fare 2026
Not confirmed for 2026 on this specific route

SeasonYear-round, but every flight depends on the tide table and is more disrupted by weather and swell than Benbecula's tarmac runway. Bookingloganair.co.uk. Run byLoganair.

Cycling the Hebridean Way through South Uist and Eriskay

Eriskay causeway to Pollachar, then the spine road and lanes north through South Uist to the Benbecula causeway

The Hebridean Way is way-marked the length of the Outer Hebrides; cyclists follow a slightly different line from hikers through South Uist, taking the loop through Baghasdal to Daliburgh and then staying on the main A865 north rather than the coastal machair path hikers use, rejoining a lane past Ormacleit. No bicycle hire business on South Uist itself was found in this research, so this is a bring-your-own-bike route – riders arrive already equipped, typically off the Ardmhor–Eriskay or Lochboisdale ferry, both of which carry bikes.

When
n/a – ride at any time; single-track roads have passing places used by both directions of traffic
Takes
A day or more to cross South Uist depending on stops; the whole Hebridean Way end to end is a multi-day trip
Fare 2026
Free once you have a bike; both relevant CalMac ferries carry bicycles

SeasonYear-round, best May to September; single-track lanes and open moor are exposed to autumn and winter gales. Run byn/a – way-marked public route, no operator.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

8 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

No fare could be confirmed for either CalMac ferry (Lochboisdale – Mallaig/Oban, or Ardmhor – Eriskay). Unlike Arran's short Clyde routes, no static fare-chart PDF for these two routes could be found at a guessable URL, and the ticketing.calmac.co.uk booking engine needs a live session to price a specific journey. Road Equivalent Tariff does apply (confirmed on transport.gov.scot), so fares are low and mileage-based, but no number is recorded here. Ask at booking or at the pier.

  2. 02

Useful data endpoint, not yet documented for these routes in docs/13-api-inventory.md: CalMac's unauthenticated GraphQL API at https://apim.calmac.co.uk/graphql (already noted for Arran) also serves a live sailing-search query, portPairSailings, taking originPortName, destinationPortName, sailingStartDate and sailingEndDate, and returning real departure and arrival times with a status per sailing. This is how the frequency figures in this file for both South Uist ferries were pinned to specific dates rather than a possibly stale PDF. The routes query also gives a live routeStatuses field (SAILING/BE_AWARE/DISRUPTIONS etc) per route, checked here on 28 September 2026 for routeCode 038 (Mallaig/Oban – Lochboisdale) and 080 (Ardmhor – Eriskay).

  3. 03

Correction to the brief: the brief asks about 'the W17 and other Hebridean Transport buses' – the operator actually named on the current Comhairle nan Eilean Siar W17 timetable is D.A. Travel, not a company called 'Hebridean Transport'. 'Hebridean Transport' may be a generic or former term; this file uses the operator name as printed on the 2026 timetable.

  4. 04

Could not confirm a Loganair schedule grid for Stornoway – Benbecula on Loganair's own site; the destination page found (loganair.co.uk/en-gb/flights-to-benbecula) shows live Glasgow fares only, and the Monday-to-Friday, 35-minute Stornoway service is carried over from Wikivoyage. The route's continued existence in 2026 was not independently verified against a primary Loganair timetable.

  5. 05

No car hire, taxi or private-hire operator on South Uist itself could be confirmed; Wikivoyage says only that 'the nearest car hire is at Benbecula airport' without naming a firm. Ask at the airport or the ferry terminal.

  6. 06

No bicycle hire business was found on South Uist; the Hebridean Way entry here assumes riders bring their own machine, unlike Arran where a hire shop exists. If one operates on the island, this file should be corrected.

  7. 07

The exact Sunday sailing count on Ardmhor – Eriskay in autumn (as opposed to the Apr–Oct and Nov–Mar seasonal figures Wikivoyage gives) was only checked for one Sunday (4 October 2026, three sailings), which sits between the two Wikivoyage figures of five and two; treat the seasonal boundary date as unconfirmed.

  8. 08

Whether the winter Mallaig-to-Oban switch happens on a fixed calendar date each year, or is set sailing-by-sailing, could not be confirmed; the live booking data checked simply showed no October Mallaig sailings selling into November and a thin Wednesday/Friday Oban pattern instead, which is consistent with Wikivoyage's account but was not traced to a published winter timetable document.
