Phuket
Songthaews from Phuket Town's Ranong Road market undercut every tourist-facing option; the airport, the Smart Bus and the Rassada and Bang Rong piers cover most of the island, but a taxi and tuk-tuk cartel controls the airport rank and has pushed back hard against Grab.

12 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed eleven ways of moving to, from or around Phuket: four by road, four hired or on demand and three by water, from 14 sources. One entry is not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Five of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.
The fares were seen in 2023 to 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. One fare carries no year, because it could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate 6 of the 12 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 29 September 2026, and ends with four things we could not confirm.
By road
Phuket Town songthaews (pink town routes, blue beach routes)

Rules, permits and closures
West-coast red flags in the monsoon

A red flag flying on the beach means the lifeguards or municipality have closed swimming due to rough seas; heed it regardless of how calm the water looks
- When
- raised during periods of strong surf and rip currents, most often in the May–October monsoon season though flags go up outside those months too
- Takes

What we could not find out
4 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Bundhaya Speedboat's per-route seasonal closure windows, referenced in docs/13-api-inventory.md as its main value, render only client-side on /routes when filtered by from/to; a plain fetch of the page returned the full route list (confirmed Phuket/Rassada, Ko Yao Noi, Ko Yao Yai, Ko Lanta and others are served) but no priced fares or date windows – ask at a Rassada Pier agent or fetch with a JS-capable browser for exact season dates.
- 02
No current, dated fare sheet was found for the Sarasin Bridge crossing itself (there is no toll; it is a public road bridge), or for a Phang Nga public bus service specifically – long-distance buses from the BKS terminal serve Phang Nga among other stops per Wikivoyage but a standalone Phuket–Phang Nga timetable/fare was not found.
- 03
Could not confirm current, dated fares for Grab within Phuket beyond the airport pickup arrangement; ask the app for a live quote.
- 04
The claimed cartel enforcement against metered taxis (scarcity of meters) is supported by the Wikivoyage prepaid/meter-desk description and the mustsharenews.com account of driver association pushback against Grab, but no single dated source quantifies how many metered taxis operate island-wide.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Phuket is this.
