Havelock (Swaraj Dweep)

Everything arrives at one jetty at Govind Nagar – fast private catamarans from Port Blair for people who booked weeks ahead, a cheap government ferry for people who queued – and from that jetty an hourly island bus, shared jeeps and autos run the two roads to Radhanagar and Kalapathar, while morning speedboats leave the same pier for Elephant Beach.

The place

Havelock Island, officially known as Swaraj Dweep, is one of the largest islands in Ritchie's Archipelago, to the east of Great Andaman within the Andaman Islands of India. It belongs to the South Andaman administrative district, part of the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The island is 41 km (25 mi) northeast of the capital city, Port Blair.

How transport works here

8 ways of moving, each with its rule

We confirmed eight ways of moving to, from or around Havelock: three by water, two by road, two hired or on demand and one under your own steam, from 21 sources. Three of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.

The fares were seen in 2026; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. We rate 2 of the 8 high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 21 September 2026, and ends with six things we could not confirm.

Private catamaran ferry, Port Blair to Swaraj Dweep

Haddo Jetty, Port Blair to Havelock (Govind Nagar) Jetty; several operators continue to Neil / Shaheed Dweep

Four operators share the route – Makruzz, Nautika, Green Ocean and ITT Majestic – with around thirteen sailings a day between roughly 06:00 and 14:00. Board at Haddo Jetty, about 8 km from Port Blair airport; Phoenix Bay is occasionally used as a backup, so check the jetty printed on the ticket. Arrive 45–90 minutes early with the photo ID whose name matches the ticket exactly; counters shut 15–30 minutes before sailing.

When
About 13 departures a day in season, 06:00 to 14:00
Takes
1h 25m to 1h 30m on Makruzz, Nautika and ITT Majestic; 2h to 2h 15m on Green Ocean
Fare 2026
₹1,000–1,400 Green Ocean economy to royal; Makruzz premium from ₹1,250–1,950, deluxe ₹2,540, royal ₹2,940–3,500; Nautika ₹1,250–1,900, business ₹3,400; ITT Majestic ₹1,564–2,000. One source reports a ₹500 fuel surcharge on top.

SeasonYear-round, but the schedule thins June to September and some vessels are withdrawn for the monsoon. Book three to four weeks ahead December to February. BookingOperator sites and agents online; seats sell out well before the day, so this is not a walk-up service. Run byMakruzz, Nautika, Green Ocean Seaways, ITT Majestic.

Government ferry (Directorate of Shipping Services)

Phoenix Bay Jetty, Port Blair to Havelock Jetty; onward sailings link Havelock with Neil, Long Island and Rangat

The cheap option locals use. Book at the DSS STARS counters at Phoenix Bay Jetty or a Common Service Centre, or on the STARS portal at dss.andamannicobar.gov.in, which is open 00:30 to 23:30. Counters run 09:00–16:00 Monday to Friday and 09:00–12:00 Saturday. On Havelock the counter at the jetty sells return tickets 09:15–12:15 and 14:15–16:15. Tickets for Swaraj Dweep open only about two days before sailing and go fast, so resorts and agents hoover them up – if you have no return ticket, get to the Havelock counter early and hold your place in the queue.

When
Two to three sailings a day from Port Blair, typically 06:20 and 14:00; return sailings around 09:00 and mid-afternoon
Takes
2h 30m to 3h
Fare 2026
₹770 seat and ₹970 chair for non-islanders; ₹95 and ₹135 for islanders. A ₹50 service fee applies if booked through a Common Service Centre. Fares were revised for FY 2026-27.

SeasonYear-round; sailings are pulled at short notice in bad weather and the daily schedule is published in the local papers. BookingSTARS counters, Common Service Centres, or dss.andamannicobar.gov.in. Report two hours before sailing with original photo ID – embarkation gates close 30 minutes out. Baggage 40 kg cabin, 30 kg bunk, 25 kg deck. Run byDirectorate of Shipping Services, Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

Elephant Beach boats from Havelock jetty

Havelock (Govind Nagar) Jetty to Elephant Beach, about 9 km up the coast

Small shared speedboats, roughly ten seats, leave from the main jetty; buy at the ticket counters on the pier or through any dive shop or hotel desk. They start around 07:30–09:00 and stop by early afternoon, so this is a morning trip only. The alternative is a 2.5 km jungle trail from the Radhanagar road, about 30 minutes on foot – muddy and sometimes closed.

When
Morning departures through to early afternoon, when full
Takes
15–30 minutes each way
Fare 2026
About ₹1,000 per person return, life jacket and a short snorkel included; agents quote ₹950–1,500. A whole boat for eight runs about ₹4,000–5,000 return.

SeasonOctober to May is the reliable window; June to September the sea often stops the boats even when the beach is open. BookingAt the jetty counter on the day, or online through an Andaman agent. Run bylocal boat owners, sold through jetty counters and agents.

Island bus, jetty to Radhanagar

Havelock Jetty (Beach 1) via the market and Beach 5 to Radhanagar (Beach 7), with a second road to Kalapathar

A local bus works an hourly circuit between the jetty and the villages, and one waits at Beach 1 around the time the morning ferry lands, roughly 10:00–10:30. There is no printed timetable at the stop – ask at the market or the jetty gate which bus is next. Electric buses have been added to the fleet.

When
Roughly hourly circuit, with a bus timed to the morning ferry arrival
Takes
30–45 minutes jetty to Radhanagar, about 12 km
Fare 2026
About ₹50 a ticket from Beach 1 to Radhanagar

SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, pay on board. Run byAndaman and Nicobar State Transport.

share jeep

Shared jeeps on the two island roads

Jetty and market to Beach 5, Radhanagar and Kalapathar

Jeeps work the same two roads as the bus and fill up at the jetty and the market, leaving when full. They are the fallback when the bus has just gone. Say your beach number, not a hotel name – everything on Havelock is indexed by beach number.

When
When full, concentrated around ferry arrivals
Takes
30–45 minutes to Radhanagar
Fare 2026
A little more than the ₹50 bus fare

SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, pay the driver. Run byprivate owner-drivers.

tuk tuk

Auto rickshaws with semi-fixed beach fares

Jetty (Beach 1), market, Beach 3, Beach 5, Radhanagar (Beach 7), Kalapathar

Autos line up outside the jetty gate as each ferry lands and at the market. Fares between the standard points are broadly agreed rather than metered, so quote the beach numbers and settle the price before moving. For Radhanagar it is usually worth negotiating a return with waiting time rather than paying twice.

When
Always at the jetty on ferry arrival; scarcer after dark
Takes
10 minutes jetty to Beach 5, 25–30 minutes to Radhanagar
Fare 2026
Beach 5 to market ₹100, Beach 1 to Beach 5 ₹200, market to Radhanagar ₹400 on Wikivoyage; guide sites quote ₹50–200 short hops and ₹700–1,000 to Radhanagar, and ₹400–600 for a negotiated round trip

SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, agree the fare first. Run byowner-drivers.

07
private hire

Full-day taxi

Anywhere on the island – typically jetty, Radhanagar, Kalapathar and back

Taxis wait at the jetty and are booked through hotels. Rates are quoted by the day rather than the trip, which is how most package visitors get round the island.

When
On demand
Takes
Eight-hour day
Fare 2026
Around ₹1,500 for an air-conditioned car for eight hours on Wikivoyage; other operators quote from ₹2,000 a day

SeasonYear-round. BookingThrough the hotel or at the jetty. Run bylocal taxi owners.

scooter hire

Scooter, motorcycle and bicycle hire

Self-drive on the two sealed roads

Hire shops cluster near the jetty and in Govind Nagar market, and most guesthouses can produce a scooter within the hour. An Indian driving licence is asked for. Fill up before evening – the fuel stations shut around 17:00 and there are only a couple on the island.

When
Daily hire, walk in
Takes
About 30 minutes jetty to Radhanagar by scooter
Fare 2026
Honda Activa around ₹500 a day and geared bikes ₹500 a day on Wikivoyage; other sources say ₹400–600 or ₹500–900 a day plus fuel. Bicycles ₹80 a day on Wikivoyage, ₹100–150 elsewhere. Petrol runs ₹100–120 a litre.

SeasonYear-round; the roads are slick and the sea rough June to September. BookingWalk in, leave an ID copy. Run bylocal hire shops and guesthouses.

Not confirmed

What we could not find out

6 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.

  1. 01

Government ferry fares differ between sources – ₹770 seat / ₹970 chair, ₹850 flat, and older ₹250 / ₹350 coach and first class. DSS has published a revised FY 2026-27 tariff; check the fare enquiry on dss.andamannicobar.gov.in before quoting.

  2. 02

No published timetable for the island bus. The hourly circuit and the ferry-timed departure are reported but the actual clock times are not posted anywhere online – ask at the jetty gate.

  3. 03

Havelock to Neil, Long Island and Rangat government sailings exist but their days, times and fares were not confirmed from a government source.

  4. 04

Whether the Pawan Hans helicopter from Port Blair carries ordinary tourists to Swaraj Dweep, and at what fare, is unconfirmed. Wikivoyage lists +91-3192-233601.

  5. 05

Monsoon behaviour is described only loosely. No operator publishes which vessels are withdrawn in which months, so June to September itineraries need buffer days.

  6. 06

Nothing found on dinghies, fishing-boat hire or cargo boats out of Govind Nagar jetty, which are visibly used locally.
