Bago
Bago is 80-90 km and about two hours from Yangon by road or rail, which makes it Myanmar's classic wrong day trip: most visitors try to see it and the Golden Rock in one day and end up rushing both. Nearly every fare and timetable found for it predates 2021 and could not be re-confirmed from a live source, while the one thing that is confirmed and current is that the road southeast toward Kyaiktiyo runs into a zone the UK now advises against all travel to.

11 ways of moving, each with its rule
We confirmed nine ways of moving to, from or around Bago: four by road, three hired or on demand and two by rail and cable, from 25 sources. Two entries are not a service at all but a rule that decides whether travel happens: a permit, a closure, a border, a season or an authority's say-so. Two of them run only on demand or when the seats are full, so there is no timetable to show; the rule is written where the timetable would be.
The fares were seen in 2019; a fare from an older year is a floor, not a price. Ten fares carry no year, because they could not be confirmed and the field says so. We rate none high confidence, our own judgement of the sources. The entry was checked on 29 September 2026, and ends with nine things we could not confirm.
By road
Yangon to Bago highway buses
Aung Mingalar Bus Terminal or the Strand/Sule Pagoda Rd corner in Yangon to Bago's Highway Bus Station, about 17.3266, 96.4719
Wikivoyage lists hourly departures from 07:00 from the Aung Mingalar terminal, and separately from the corner of Strand Road and Sule Pagoda Road. A cheaper alternative is city bus 51 to Saw Bwar Gyi Gone bus station near Yangon airport, then a connecting bus to Bago. Arriving in Bago you may be dropped at the Highway Bus Station itself or at a bus stop near the San Francisco Hotel closer to the centre - this is normal, not a sign you were shortchanged. A tout sometimes boards the bus outside town claiming there is no main bus station and that he alone can sell an onward ticket, at double price; this is false, and the real station is a short walk or ride away. Buses running the separate Mandalay-Yangon expressway corridor (serving Bagan, Mandalay, Naypyidaw) can also be used to reach Bago, but from that direction you may be set down on the highway itself and have to cover the last 26 km into town by pickup.
- When
- Every hour from 07:00, according to Wikivoyage; current frequency not independently confirmed
- Takes
- About 2 hours from Yangon; the cheaper bus-51-plus-connection route takes 1-2 hours
- Fare
- 3,000 kyat quoted by Wikivoyage for the direct Yangon-Bago bus, undated on the page and not corroborated by any 2024-or-later source; the bus-51-plus-connection alternative was quoted at 1,000 kyat, also undated
SeasonYear-round; the corridor lies on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, which the UK advises has seen attacks (see the checkpoints and travel-advisory entry). BookingAt the terminal or through a hotel; JJ Express lists Bago in its own city list, so it is bookable through its network, though no fare could be confirmed on jjexpress.net. Run byMultiple highway bus operators from Aung Mingalar; not itemised by name in the source.
Shared tuk-tuks and pickups around Bago
Along the main roads between the sights - the reclining Buddhas, Shwemawdaw Pagoda, the clock tower and the train and bus stations
Converted pickups and tuk-tuks run along Bago's main roads and can be flagged like a bus; ask the fare before boarding, since drivers sometimes try for far more from a foreigner than the standard local price. Since the sights are spread over several kilometres, most visitors combine short shared rides with walking rather than trying to cover Bago entirely on foot.
- When
- Through the day along the main roads
- Takes
- A few minutes between any two nearby stops
- Fare
- 200 kyat for a standard shared ride, per Wikivoyage; drivers sometimes ask up to 1,000 kyat from a foreigner. Undated and not corroborated by a current source.
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, flag one down. Run byIndependent drivers.
Bago to Kyaikto, Kinpun and Mawlamyine (Mon State)
Bago's Highway Bus Station or Clock Tower to Kyaikto/Kinpun (for the Golden Rock) or on to Mawlamyine, Mon State's capital
This is the road the brief calls the Mon State road south, and both Bago pages on Wikivoyage describe it from opposite ends: some buses run direct to Kinpun (the Golden Rock 'base camp'), and Win-Express is named on the Kyaiktiyo side as running that direct service; most others only go as far as Kyaikto town on the highway, from where a separate pickup covers the last stretch to Kinpun. Buses to Mawlamyine, Myanmar's third city and Mon State's capital, run further down the same road. Whichever you take, understand before you go that most of Mon State itself, and the highway east of it in Bago Region, is a zone the UK currently advises against all travel to - see the checkpoints and travel-advisory entry. This corridor is not a routine drive-through any more.
- When
- Multiple direct buses to Kinpun through the morning per Wikivoyage (06:00, 08:00, 09:00, 13:00 quoted from the Kinpun end); Mawlamyine buses at 07:00, 08:00, 09:00 and 12:30
- Takes
- 2-3 hours to Kyaikto/Kinpun; 6-7 hours on to Mawlamyine
- Fare
- 4-5,000 kyat to Kyaikto/Kinpun and 5-10,000 kyat to Mawlamyine, per Wikivoyage. Undated and not corroborated by a current operator source.
SeasonYear-round, subject to the security situation described below. BookingAt the bus station or through a hotel/agent. Run byWin-Express and other highway bus companies.
The Kinpun to Kyaiktiyo mountain truck (Golden Rock)
Kinpun Truck Station, about 17.4004, 97.0778, up the mountain road to the Golden Rock pagoda at about 17.4817, 97.0987
This is the transport experience the brief flags, and it is not an incidental detail: open trucks fitted with rows of wooden or metal plank benches, packed to around 45 people, climb the mountain road from Kinpun in a way Wikivoyage itself calls rollercoaster-like. Trucks leave when full, which in low season can mean a real wait, and getting out halfway (at the cable car's lower station) rather than going all the way up is possible but harder to arrange, since drivers reportedly prefer a full load to the top. Check when the last truck comes back down, since the alternative after dark is a long, dark walk.
- When
- On demand, when full; no fixed timetable
- Takes
- Roughly 20-30 minutes up the mountain by truck
- Fare
- 1,500 kyat to the halfway point, 2,000 kyat to the top, one way, per Wikivoyage. Undated and not corroborated by a current source.
SeasonYear-round; walking the same route in the rains is possible with rain cover, per Wikivoyage. BookingNone, pay at the truck station. Run byIndependent truck owner-operators based at Kinpun Truck Station.
Hired, booked and on demand
Yangon to Bago by taxi
Any pickup point in Yangon to Bago's sights, with a stop possible at Taukkyan on the way
A private taxi is the way most people actually do the Bago sightseeing, because the pagodas are spread out enough that you need a vehicle between them anyway; the same car that brings you from Yangon can be used to get around Bago itself and then continue on to Kyaiktiyo, which is why this is sold as a combined day or two-day hire rather than a one-way transfer. Arrange through a Yangon hotel or a street-side taxi and agree the full day's plan up front. No dedicated shared-taxi service between Yangon and Bago (distinct from the bus and this private hire) could be confirmed.
- When
- On demand
- Takes
- About 1.5-2 hours to Bago from central Yangon by road
- Fare
- US$40-50 one way quoted by Wikivoyage for the Yangon-Bago leg alone, undated and not corroborated by a current source; a full Yangon-Bago-Kyaiktiyo circuit would cost more and was not found priced anywhere
SeasonYear-round. BookingThrough a hotel, or hail directly in Yangon. Run byIndependent taxi drivers and Yangon hotels/agents.
Motorbike taxis in Bago
Anywhere in town and at the main sights
Unlike Yangon, where riding a motorcycle is against the law, Bago is an ordinary Myanmar town where motorbikes and motorbike taxis operate normally - part of why it functions as a transport hub between Yangon and everywhere else. Motorbike-taxi and tuk-tuk drivers can approach in numbers at the sights and quote well above the local rate; walking away and flagging a passing rider or a shared vehicle instead is the usual fix.
- When
- Through the day
- Takes
- A few minutes to cross town; a full day is possible for sightseeing
- Fare
- Locals pay about 500 kyat for a point-to-point motorbike ride, per Wikivoyage; foreigners are sometimes quoted 1,000-5,000 kyat depending on distance and how hard they bargain. Undated and not corroborated by a current source.
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, arrange on the spot. Run byIndependent drivers.
Self-drive motorbike, tuk-tuk and bicycle hire
Pick up in Bago town, cover the sight circuit yourself
Whole-day self-drive hire (bike only, no driver) is negotiable from guesthouses and rental points, and bicycles are a cheaper, slower option for the same circuit; ask your hotel or try San Francisco Hotel, which Wikivoyage names as a rental point.
- When
- All day, on request
- Takes
- A full day covers the main sight circuit
- Fare
- 6,000 kyat for a whole-day motorbike or tuk-tuk self-drive hire, and 1,000-2,000 kyat a day for a bicycle, per Wikivoyage. Undated and not corroborated by a current source.
SeasonYear-round. BookingWalk in, or ask at your guesthouse. Run byGuesthouses and rental shops, including San Francisco Hotel.
By rail and cable
Bago railway station and the Yangon-Mandalay line
Bago railway station, about 17.3348, 96.4749, in the town centre, on the Yangon-Naypyidaw-Mandalay main line
The station sits in the middle of Bago, unlike the out-of-town bus terminal, which Wikivoyage calls the reason to prefer the train for the Yangon leg. Tickets are bought at the station. Whether the current national picture for foreigners buying rail tickets (reported elsewhere in this project as restricted 'for security reasons' on the Bagan corridor) also applies to the short, heavily used Yangon-Bago commuter-distance service is unconfirmed; this is a different, much shorter working than the long-distance Bagan or Mandalay sleeper trains and may not be treated the same way.
- When
- Historically several trains a day each way - Wikivoyage lists departures from Yangon at 06:00, 08:00, 11:00, 15:00, 17:00 and 20:30, and from Bago back to Yangon at 02:45, 02:58, 03:16, 04:13, 05:49, 12:11, 15:24 and 18:59. Current timetable not verified against Myanma Railways directly.
- Takes
- About 2 hours each way
- Fare
- 1,150 kyat upper class / 600 kyat ordinary class from Yangon, per Wikivoyage; undated and not corroborated by a current Myanma Railways source
SeasonYear-round; the UK government advisory says only that some Myanmar rail routes still operate with unreliable timetables. BookingAt Bago station, passport required. Run byMyanma Railways.
Golden Rock cable car
Yathetaung base station up to the Kyaiktiyo pagoda entrance, an alternative to the truck and the hiking trail
Opened in December 2017 as a Myanmar-South Korean joint venture, this was Myanmar's first cable car and gives a faster, calmer alternative to the open trucks. Two fare figures exist and disagree: a 2019 tour-operator page quotes 10,000 kyat return and, by implication, about 7,000 kyat one way; Wikivoyage's own (undated) figure is 10,000 kyat one way and 14,000 kyat return - roughly the opposite ratio. Neither could be confirmed against a current ticketing page, so treat both as approximate and expect to pay at the station.
- When
- Runs alongside the trucks in season; a 2026 wire report noted the service pausing rides ahead of the monsoon, though that report could not be reached directly to confirm details
- Takes
- 8 to 15 minutes
- Fare 2019
- 10,000 kyat for a round trip per a 2019 tour-operator page; Wikivoyage separately gives 10,000 kyat one way / 14,000 kyat return, undated, and the two figures do not agreeSeen in 2019: a floor, not a price.
SeasonReported paused ahead of the monsoon in at least one recent season; exact months not confirmed. BookingAt the cable car station. Run byA Myanmar-South Korean joint venture, run under Mon State government oversight.
Rules, permits and closures
Bago pagoda government fee
Collected at Shwethalyaung Pagoda, Shwemawdaw Pagoda and Kanbawzathadi Palace, the three sites where Wikivoyage says it is actually enforced
A blanket government fee applies in principle to most Bago sights, but is only strictly checked at three of them, per Wikivoyage; other pagodas in town are free to enter in practice. Some taxi drivers offer to help you dodge the fee for an unofficial tip, which the source describes as pointless since avoiding it legitimately is easy and the fee is cheap by comparison. This is a separate, smaller fee from the Bagan Archaeological Zone ticket documented elsewhere in this dataset - do not confuse the two.
- When
- Once per site visited
- Takes
- A few minutes at the gate
- Fare
- 10,000 kyat, per Wikivoyage. Undated and not corroborated by a government source.
SeasonYear-round. BookingNone, pay in cash at the gate. Run byMinistry of Hotels and Tourism / Department of Archaeology, per Bagan's equivalent fee; not separately named for Bago.
Checkpoints and the security situation since 2021
Every overland approach to and beyond Bago
Bago town itself sits inside the area the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to across most of Bago Region, and travel in Myanmar generally means passing through police or military checkpoints, where you should always carry your passport. The sharper line is east: FCDO advises against all travel - not just essential-travel-only - to Mon State and to the area east of the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway within Bago Region. Since Kyaiktiyo, Kyaikto and Kinpun all sit inside Mon State, the classic Bago-to-Golden-Rock road trip currently crosses into a zone under the UK's strongest advisory level, which was not the case before 2021 and is worth establishing rather than assuming, exactly as the brief asks. This is a British government travel advisory, not a legal bar to travel, and other nationalities' advice may differ; check your own government's guidance and current conditions before relying on it.

What we could not find out
9 things the researcher looked for and did not find, in their own words, with where to ask instead. None of this goes into the planner; it stays here until someone confirms it.
- 01
Almost nothing in this file could be confirmed against a 2024-or-later operator or government source. Wikivoyage's Bago and Kyaiktiyo pages carry no per-line edit dates for their Get In/Get Around sections, and every fare and timetable taken from them is marked undated here rather than assigned a false year. Ask locally for current prices.
- 02
The brief's premise that Myanmar National Airlines' flight-status board and MyanmarBusTicket serve useful data for Bago does not hold: Bago has no airport, so the MNA board is not relevant here, and MyanmarBusTicket's own city dropdown (checked directly on its homepage form) lists no 'Bago' option at all among roughly 30 cities, though it does list 'Kyaiktiyo~Golden Rock' - Bago itself is simply not sold through that platform.
- 03
docs/13-api-inventory.md, which the task said documents both of the above, in fact contains no Myanmar entry of any kind - no Myanmar National Airlines, no MyanmarBusTicket, no Myanmar operator at all. This looks like a stale or mistaken pointer in the brief; the correction is recorded here rather than assumed silently.
- 04
Whether trishaws (as distinct from tuk-tuks and shared pickups) are a real, separate mode in Bago, as the brief suggests, could not be confirmed. Every source found describes shared or private tuk-tuks and pickups, motorbikes, and bicycles, but never a pedal trishaw specifically in Bago (unlike, for example, Mandalay or the Delta towns). Treat 'trishaw' as unconfirmed for this place.
- 05
Current train operating status for the short Yangon-Bago run is unconfirmed. This project has separately established that the long-distance Yangon-Bagan train is not running and that rail tickets are reportedly not sold to foreigners nationally 'for security reasons' (seat61.com, 2026), but whether that applies to the much shorter, heavily used Bago commuter run was not separately confirmed either way. Ask at Bago station.
- 06
The Golden Rock cable car's current fare could not be pinned down: a 2019 tour-operator page and Wikivoyage's own undated figure give round-trip and one-way prices that do not agree with each other (see the cable_car entry). A 2026-dated report of the cable car pausing ahead of monsoon season turned up in a Google News search attributed to Global New Light of Myanmar, but gnlm.com.mm returned an HTTP 403 Cloudflare challenge on every attempt, including over HTTP/1.1 with a browser user agent, so that specific claim could not be verified at the source and is not relied on beyond a general mention.
- 07
No current bus company timetable or fare could be confirmed for Bago specifically. JJ Express's own site lists Bago among its serviceable cities but publishes no Bago-specific gate phone number (only a Bagan one, which is a different town), and no fare for the Bago route could be found on the site.
- 08
Whether the highway bus stops described as being outside Bago town on the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway have a fixed name or facilities was not established from any source; Wikivoyage describes the situation (a 26 km gap to cover by pickup) but names no specific stop.
- 09
Grab's coverage of Bago (confirmed for Bagan elsewhere in this project) was not separately checked or confirmed here.
What the planner can route today
The options above live on the place page, not in the departure board: a boat that comes when you phone has no time to show. What the board can do for Bago is this.
